back then in the seventies, nightcrawler's teleportation ability was more limited than it is now, and his ability to teleport the clothing he and whomever he was carrying along with him worked both ways. anyone touching him was part of him and thus able to be teleported, the only exception was if the additional mass was beyond the threshold of what he could teleport (back then) something like 2 people besides himself.
in the old handbooks, his teleportation power was thoroughly explained.

the scary thing about his teleportation ability was that he could only teleport to places that he can see or has a mental reference of it's landscape so that he doesn't mistakingly teleport into an object.
and more pertinent to the topic, he also had to jump before he initiated a teleport so that his feat wouldn't sink into the floor since the ground isn't always flat. plus logan scared him so.. maybe he was worried he'd mess up and teleport into a wall or something.
