i think it's just for show.

though he does need to press it to change the beam width/height.

classically, the button for the lens controls the density of the particle release. the beam gets more ruby colored (potent) the more he turns the quartz lenses perpendicular to the beam.

only with the visor off you get the unhindered optic blast.
