Based on the previews/solicits I've read, those beings are essentially just revamped Cosmic Gamblers.

Perhaps someone with knowledge on this like Galan007 or Carver9 can answer, but how can IDW keep releasing Star Wars comics? Even if they are offshoots?

IDW presented the idea of publishing a Star Wars comic series geared toward younger readers to Disney/Lucasfilm. The latter liked the idea, and allows them to publish Star Wars Adventures(and a few other offshoots) under the official Lucasfilm brand.

The IDW stories are supposed to be canon.
