It seems to me that Thor chose to fight BRB as just Thor, not as Cosmic King Thor hence the vast gulf between his initial *****-slap of BRB into the planetoid and the more equal exchange on the ground in his usual Thor clothing.

Just as Thanos can fight without using the power of the stones, Thor can fight without tapping into the Odin power.

It seems he only switched back when attacked by Galactus and when he took Storm Breaker.
