Hoping the latter every time they reference something good they make it worse. Remember when Bruce Timm cribbed in Amada Waller into Batman Beyond, and made Bruce a biological father to Terry, which was a completely unnecessary change to the source and conflicted with the inspirational "random street urchin gets his act together" narrative to be replaced with a "Terry was fated by blood" theme?

It was a bold choice by Timm. I think though it helped to set Terry apart from a cheap Spier-Man analogue. I won't argue against the criticism though. Either Batman is Batman... or Batman is Bruce Wayne. It's kinda one or the other and DC comics can't decide which.
