Annihilus lied, knowing full well that Johnny as a hostage may provide excellent leverage to be used at some point in the future, and as long as Reed is convinced Johnny is dead nobody will come looking for him in the meantime.

The big FF story arc in 2012/2013 will be "Storm Quest: The Search for Johnny Storm." (they would have called it "Johnny Quest" except for legal reasons).

Johnny, having escaped Annihilus, has become the leader of the Negative Zone Resistance. Forced to take responsibility for his own life and the life of thousands of resistance fighters, Johnny finally grows up and becomes the man he should have been, reuniting with the FF and leading the resistance to victory.

In homage to the Invisible Girl to Invisible Woman moment, Johnny Storm will become simply John Storm.

This will nicely finish up all the recent plot points with Johnny moping around the HQ playing video games, feeling dumb compared to the kids, and complaining about his life going nowhere.

Somebody wondered why they didn't mount a rescue attempt.

It's Reed with prep, he usually finds a way to sneak into the Negative Zone. It's not as if he's never been there before. 😛

And yet at no point Luthor even bothered him, his whinny voice non-withstanding.

His feats from Blackest night beg to differ.

I'm not saying that he is weak, what I am saying is he isn't powerful to the point where people are pitting him against Thanos and Odin... let alone Surfer.

Are you saying Surfer > Odin or Thanos?
