Wizard War - Character Creation and Discussion

The Wizard War - A back story to Harry Potter

The story runs parallel with Harry Potter books, starting with the Triwizard tournament and an investigation from 6 selected students (NPCs), 2 from beauxbatons, two from hogwarts, two from Durmstang, these students will carry out an investigation in and out of Hogwarts in order to catch Barty Crouch jr.

It has been made my choice to have all NPC's in year 6 or 7 of magical schooling, since it is most probable younger students cannot defend themselves as good as an advanced student. And you cannot justify the knowledge of complex spells without falling into a sort of Godmode.

Path selection: It is basically designed to make the NPC choose what path he will follow, there are three kinds: Path of Wisdom, Path of Valor and Path of Might. Path of Wisdom is for a wizard to become a Scholar, and Valor is for Aurors and Might is for mostly dark wizards. There are also light and dark points, according to the path you choose to follow, if you do evil, you will have dark points and you will not be able to cast powerful spells that are light in nature or if you have a big amount of dark points your ability to use light powers will be zero. It's the exact same thing with Light points. Once your Dark points get to half your wisdom attribute points, you’re TAINTED, only selfless acts of redemption will save you and you will suffer from the dark, once your dark points get over your wisdom points then you’re definitely DARK, some of your Stats will increase but every two levels you will suffer from the dark, loosing one point of an attribute of your choosing (you can’t choose one twice), to become light again you must do a dramatic Heroic act, and you will loose all your magic points. So think seriously about becoming evil.

Spells will be bought with skill points, there are two kinds: Cannonical, and Unforgivable...These spells have been separated, Cannonical (Light) and Unforgivable(dark).

Equipment: I have designed the Equipment store, also adding school material and other stuff.

Rules: No godmoding (everything like: "I'm a supreme all powerfull being able to whoop everything in the universe" is forbidden).
No controling other people's characters.
No more than 1 character is permitted per Player.
Questions and other stuff PM me before anything.
No calling other people names, no excesive cursing.
Once in the game player assumes his character's role so no off topic conversation or questions, or I will assume your character asked them.
All results of battles, and specially between characters are mine to decide, no questioning.
No one can be a character from the movie unless they ask me, and even then it is not completely certain, if I decide it conflicts with what I've got planed then it's a definite no no.
Certain events will be changed to acomodate the story, but essentialy keeping the original content of the books.
And specially no spam, please.

These are the players that I’m expecting to count on in the RP:

KillerNinja
Inuyashapuppy! (Hermione)
Chaosbark
TigerEyes
TheQuincy (Viktor Krum)
ChakraStrings (Kingsley Shaklebolt)

Now as an additional rule, your must must be like this:

Name:
Base Level:
HP:
MP:
EXP: (current number of EXP)/(EXP needed for next level)

So now to character creation:

For the Attributes, you will distribute a total of 130 points. The max amount of points you can put on an attribute is 20.

Spell List

Canonical Spells

Light sided Spells

Accio (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

The Summoning Charm. It attracts an object to the caster.

Aguamenti (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

The charm sends a stream of water from the tip of the wand.

Alohomora (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

This spell is used to open a door or window which is mechanically or magically locked. Pointing a wand at a door and saying "Alohomora" will unlock the door. The object opened will lock once again when it is closed or returned to its original state. This spell is first used by Hermione in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone when she, Ron, and Harry are escaping from Argus Filch. It helps get them to the room where they find Fluffy. This spell can also open doors which have been magically sealed with the Colloportus spell. Doors can be magically sealed with sufficiently advanced spells so that Alohomora cannot open them, such as the door in the flying key room in Philosopher's Stone and the main gate to the Hogwarts grounds, as seen in Half-Blood Prince. Wand Movement: Twirl your wand counter-clockwise once while saying the incantation; make sure on the last syllable of the word that your wand is pointing at its target. It is probably a compressed form of Latin Alô hoc mora intended to mean "I raise this hindrance", with Latin errors, as correctly it means "I nurture this delay".

Anapneo (MP: 4, Cost: 1 sp)

This spell was used to dislodge a pheasant from Marcus Belby's throat in Half-Blood Prince. Appears to be an Anti-Choking spell of some sort. The word is Greek and means "I breathe" so this spell is seemingly used to make or help someone breathe. The word shares its root with apnea and pneumatic; the prefix a- (often an- before vowels) is means non- or dis-, and ana- (sometimes an- before vowels) means "up" or "again".

Aparecium(MP: 4, Cost: 3 sp)

This spell makes invisible ink and perhaps invisible items in general appear. First used in Chamber of Secrets when Hermione Granger tried to make something appear in Tom Riddle's diary. See also Specialis Revelio.

Avis (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Makes birds fly out of the wand of the spellcaster. Used in Goblet of Fire by Mr Ollivander to test Viktor Krum's wand. It is also possible that this is the spell used by Hermione Granger in Half-Blood Prince to summon canaries. If so, the incantation Oppugno makes birds summoned this way attack. Avis in Latin means "bird" and along with many other spells is in a similar but different language.

Cont...

Colloportus(MP: 5, Cost: 4 sp)

This spell will magically lock a door, preventing it from being opened for a presumably limited amount of time. It is easily countered by Alohomora, however. The word is a combination of "colligare" (Latin for "bind together"😉 or Greek kollaō = "I glue or cement or weld", and "porta" (Latin for "door"😉. Used in Order of the Phoenix when Hermione needs to seal a door in the Department of Mysteries against some Death Eaters. The fact that the Death Eaters did not just open the doors with Alohomora may indicate complications.

Deletrius (MP: 5, Cost: 4 sp)

Erases images. First seen in Goblet of Fire when Amos Diggory gets rid of the echo of the Dark Mark from Harry's wand.

Densaugeo (MP: 5, Cost: 3 sp)

Makes the victim's teeth grow rapidly. Introduced in Goblet of Fire when Draco Malfoy attacked Hermione outside of the Potions classroom. "Dens" is a Latin noun and means "tooth". "Augeo" is a Latin verb and means "I grow" (from the infinitive "augere" which means "to grow"😉.

Diffindo (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

Severs the target. In Goblet of Fire when Harry urgently wants to talk to Cedric Diggory he casts this spell to rip his bag, thus delaying him for class. Harry also tried to use it in Order of the Phoenix to save Ron from the brains in the Department of Mysteries, and also in Half-Blood Prince when he wanted to switch the cover of the Half-Blood Prince's copy of Advanced Potion-Making for a new one, in order to fool Professor Snape. Ron also uses this spell to trim the lace off of his dress robes in Goblet of Fire.
In the Chamber of Secrets videogame, it is mentioned that Diffindo cuts (or severs) things that are organic (carbon-based) in material.

Engorgio(MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

Makes something grow larger. Seen in Goblet of Fire when the impostor Professor Moody casts it on a spider to enhance a demonstration of the effects of a Cruciatus Curse. Hagrid is also suspected of performing the charm on his pumpkins once.

Ennervate(MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

The counterspell to the Stunning Spell. In Goblet of Fire, Amos Diggory uses it to wake up Winky, while later on Professor Dumbledore uses it to wake up Viktor Krum. In Half-Blood Prince, Harry uses it in an attempt to wake Professor Dumbledore. Maybe more than a counterspell, there have been instances when it is used to help people regain consciousness who haven't been Stupefied. The etymological root of this spell is from Latin for "to add nerve"; hence the English word "ennervate". If spelled with one "n," however, it has the opposite meaning - to weaken, rather than invigorate (though a post hoc explanation could be fashioned to claim that it is the stunning spell that is weakened by this spell, in which case the etymology would fit).

Episkey (MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

Used in Goblet of Fire after the first task of the Triwizard Tournament. Nymphadora Tonks uses this spell in Half-Blood Prince to fix Harry's broken nose, later Harry uses it to heal a fat lip. This leads the reader to the conclusion that it is a spell to heal minor injuries (assuming a broken nose is considered a mild injury). The word comes from the Greek "episkevi" ("επισκευή"😉, which means "repair". J. K. Rowling writes in Half-Blood Prince, Harry's knowledge tells him that this spell could belong to a family (or variety) of Healing Spells, in the same way a species of plants belongs to a larger genus.

Evanesco(MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

Makes something vanish. Used in Order of the Phoenix when Snape makes Harry's Draught of Peace disappear from his cauldron. Also used in Chamber of Secrets when Snape makes the snake disappear. In Order of the Phoenix, this spell is used to make Bill's scrolls on the kitchen table vanish. It is presumed that whatever is Vanished can be made to reappear - surely Bill didn't want his scrolls to disappear completely.

Cont...

Expecto Patronum (MP: 15, Cost: 20 sp)

You may choose the form of your patronus once you purchase it.
This spell conjures a Patronus, a silvery phantom shape, usually that of an animal, which is the embodiment of the positive thoughts or character/personality/desire of the caster. A Patronus will drive away Dementors and Lethifolds. A patronus "is an anti-Dark device, which makes it highly resilient to Dark wizards; it is not hindered by physical barriers; each Patronus is unique and distinctive; nobody else can conjure another person's Patronus." Harry conjures a stag as his Patronus, while Hermione Granger conjures an otter, Ron Weasley summons a Jack Russell Terrier, and Cho Chang a swan; but, a Patronus can change form when someone has undergone emotional turmoil (as character/personality of the caster may change as well).
For the spell to work, the person must concentrate on a happy memory, which is especially difficult in the presence of a Dementor. Latin expectô patronum means "I expect ("welcome" is the literal translation) a guardian", although the Latin phrase is deep in ambiguity: ex + pecto would mean from the chest (prehaps "from the heart", implying that the Patronus is the heart's guardian, or that the wish comes from the heart), and patronum is an archaic word for father, implying that another interpretation is "I expect my father.", which could be related to the fact that Harry's patronus takes his father's animagus form. If the thought is not focused on strongly enough, a silver glow or mist appears, which does little but slow down a Dementor for a moment. Members of the Order of the Phoenix are taught by Dumbledore how to send messages through their Patronuses, and they are the only ones in the world who know this special technique, as it is Dumbledore who came up with this ingenious idea.
Dumbledore's Patronus is a phoenix.

Expelliarmus (MP: 7, Cost: 10 sp)

The disarming spell. This spell is used to disarm another wizard, typically by causing the victim's wand to fly out of reach. It also throws the wizard backwards a few feet when enough power is placed behind it. As demonstrated in Prisoner of Azkaban, simultaneous use of this spell by multiple people on a single wizard can throw the wizard back more powerfully. First seen in Chamber of Secrets, when Snape disarms Lockhart in the Duelling Club. Also used in Goblet of Fire when Harry frees Cedric Diggory from the giant spider, and in Half-Blood Prince, when Draco Malfoy disarms Dumbledore.
When dueling in the CoS game, Expelliarmus can be used as a shield, much like the Protego charm. In the PoA game, if aimed at the wand's owner it can make their spell backfire.
Etymology: likely a combination of "expel" and "arm" (when "arm" means "weapon"😉

Ferula (MP: 15, Cost: 10 sp)

Creates a splint. Used by Remus Lupin in Prisoner of Azkaban to bind Ron's leg in the Shrieking Shack. The name ferula comes from Latin, and means "carrier" or "vehicle".

Finite Incantatem(MP: 20, Cost: 20 sp)

Stops the effects of spells. Snape uses it in Chamber of Secrets to restore order in the Dueling Club. Lupin uses the short form "Finite" in Order of the Phoenix also.

Flagrate (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

With this spell, the caster's wand can leave fiery marks of the caster's choosing. Used by Hermione in Order of the Phoenix in the Department of Mysteries in the Ministry of Magic to identify which doors they had already opened by marking an "X" on them. From the Latin root flagrant or flagrare, meaning blazing.

Furnunculus (MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

Makes boils appear on the victim. Used in Goblet of Fire when Harry and Draco Malfoy get in a fight and Harry hits Gregory Goyle accidentally. Later, on the return journey of the Hogwarts Express, Harry casts this spell on Vincent Crabbe while George Weasley casts the Jelly-Legs Jinx; however, the mixture causes little tentacles to sprout all over Crabbe's face.

Impedimenta (MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

This hex is capable of tripping, freezing, binding, knocking back and generally impeding the target's progress towards the caster. Used in Goblet of Fire when Harry is practicing for the third task. Stronger uses of this spell seem capable of blowing targets away. This spell is also used in GoF when he sees a spider in the third task of the Triwizard Tournament and the spider temporarily cannot move. It is also used in Half-Blood Prince when Harry is fighting the Death Eaters.

Impervius (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Known as the Impervius Charm, this spell makes something repel (literally, become impervious to) water. It is used by Hermione in Prisoner of Azkaban on Harry's glasses and also by the Gryffindor Quidditch team in Order of the Phoenix.

Incarcerous (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

Ties someone or something up with ropes. Seen in the Harry Potter Trading Card Game. The Incarcerous incantation is first heard in Order of the Phoenix, but the same spell may have been used non-verbally to tie up Peter Pettigrew in Prisoner of Azkaban. It may also have been used by Quirrel near the end of Philosopher's Stone, but he didn't use a wand and merely "snapped his fingers".

Incendio (MP: 15, Cost: 10 sp)

Produces fire. Used in Goblet of Fire by Arthur Weasley to create a fire for Floo powder. In Half-Blood Prince, this spell is used several times in battle.
In the Philosopher's stone video game, this spell is used to temporarily stun dangerous plants.

Cont...

Langlock (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

A spell created by the Half-Blood Prince. Glues the subject's tongue to the roof of their mouth. It even works on Peeves. Probably derived from the French "langue" ("tongue"😉 and the English "lock".

Levicorpus (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

A non-verbal spell, invented by the Half-Blood Prince in which the victim is dangled upside-down by their ankles with a flash of light. Described "as though an invisible hook had hoisted Ron Weasley up by the ankle". Used in Half-Blood Prince, where Harry Potter learns it by reading notes written by the Half-Blood Prince. From Snape's pensieve, Harry watches his father, James Potter, use the spell against Severus Snape. It may also have been used in Goblet of Fire during the Quidditch world cup. Latin levis = light + corpus = body. "Levi" may also be short for "levitate", itself derived from Latin levis = "not heavy".

Liberacorpus (MP: 5, Cost: 5 sp)

Non-verbal (keep in mind all spells may be non-verbal) counter-jinx for Levicorpus. Emits a flash of light and frees the target of being hoisted by their ankle. "Libera" from "Liberare" means "to set free" and "corpus" means "body", in Latin. Though this is the Half-Blood Prince's creation, it can be speculated that Tonks used this spell to free Harry from Petrificus Totalus inside the Hogwarts Express, as the spell she used also emitted a flash of light.

Locomotor (MP: 5, Cost: 4 sp)

The target of the spell, which is said after "Locomotor", rises in the air and can be moved around by the wizard. Tonks uses it in Order of the Phoenix to move Harry's trunk ( "Locomotor Trunk" ). "Locomotor" can be interpreted from "locus" (place) and "movere" (movi, motum: to move) "to move to another place".

Locomotor Mortis (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

The leg locker curse. Malfoy uses this on Neville in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
In the Philosopher's Stone video game, this is used to stun enemies for a short period of time.
"Mortis" is Latin for "death"; therefore, the spell is intended to mean "death of motion".

Lumos (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

You must buy Nox to put the light out or it will be on always.
This spell creates a narrow beam of light that shines from the wand's tip, like a torch. It comes from the Latin term lumen, meaning a light. Despite it being rudimentary, the charm is used countless times throughout the series. Different versions of this spell used in the movie are Lumos Solem and Lumos Maxima, and the way the light is emitted is different too - in the books, it is described as 'a beam of light', but in the Prisoner of Azkaban movie, Snape's application of Lumos created a sphere of light. It may also cause the wand tip to burst into flames, as used in Order of the Phoenix to destroy a secret message from Albus Dumbledore. The spell is sometimes also used to reveal to the caster previously unseen doors and pathways.

Memory Charm “Oblibiate” (MP: 20, Cost: 15 sp)

Wipes all or part of a person's memory. While always referred to as the "Memory Charm", the actual incantation for this spell is Obliviate.
Some trained Ministry of Magic officials, called Obliviators, specialize in modifying memories, especially those of Muggles who have accidentally witnessed magic or magical creatures, e.g dragons.

Mobiliarbus (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

This spell was used by Hermione to move a tree. It is combined from the Latin words "mobilis", movable, and "arbor", tree.

Mobilicorpus (MP: 10, Cost: 10 sp)

Levitates and moves bodies. Sirius Black uses it on Snape in Prisoner of Azkaban. It seems that Mobiliarbus and Mobilicorpus are variations of the same basic spell, since they share the "Mobili" root. One can believe that there is a whole family of Mobili-spells.

Morsmordre (MP: 5, Cost: 20 sp)

Only available to those who follow Voldemort’s path.
This spell conjures the Dark Mark. It was apparently invented by Lord Voldemort. It is used by Barty Crouch Jr. in Goblet of Fire. Also used in Half-Blood Prince over the castle to lure Dumbledore to his death. Comes from the Latin words mors meaning death, and mordere, meaning to bite; this is obviously associated with the name of Lord Voldemort's followers, the Death Eaters. Ironically, this means "mother's murderer" in Norwegian, and "bite, to bite" in French.

Muffliato (MP: 10, Cost: 5 sp)

This spell fills peoples' ears with an unidentifiable buzzing, to keep them from hearing nearby conversations. It was created by the Half-Blood Prince. It is used in Half-Blood Prince by Harry and Ron on various teachers and people such as Madam Pomfrey, while Hermione refused to use any of the Half-Blood Prince's spells.

Nox (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

This spell turns off the light which is activated by the Lumos spell, and may be used to turn out other lights (like the Put-Outer), Harry and Hermione used this to turn off their wand-lights in the Shrieking Shack in Prisoner of Azkaban. Nox is Latin and means "night".

Oppugno (MP: 10, Cost: 2 sp)

Hermione uses this spell in Half-Blood Prince to make a flock of birds she had summoned attack Ron. "Oppugno" is Latin for "I attack". Likely causes animals or other beings of lesser intelligence to attack.

Orchideous (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Makes a bouquet of flowers appear out of the wand. Used in Goblet of Fire by Mr Ollivander testing Fleur Delacour's wand. "Orchideous" may be a portmanteau of orchid and hideous.

Cont...

Petrificus Totalus (MP: 15,Cost 10sp)

The full Body Bind Curse. This spell is used to temporarily make the victim be frozen in a position much like a soldier at attention, and usually the person falls down. "Petrificus" comes from the Latin word "petra", meaning "stone"; "totalus" comes from the Latin word "tota", meaning "whole, full". First used in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by Hermione, who was trying to prevent Neville from stopping her, Ron, and Harry from leaving the common room to hunt for the Philosopher's Stone. Harry uses it on Antonin Dolohov twice in Order of the Phoenix. Draco Malfoy uses it on Harry to freeze him while he hid under his invisibility cloak on the train in Half-Blood Prince. Dumbledore also uses it nonverbally, or a spell very much like it, on Harry in Half-Blood Prince to stop him from interfering in his conversation with Draco Malfoy (Battle of Hogwarts).

"Point Me" (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

The Four-Point Spell causes the caster's wand tip to point to the north cardinal point, acting like a compass. It only points north. This handy navigation spell was used by Harry during the third task of the Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire and was discovered by Hermione Granger.

Portus (MP: 25 Cost: 15sp)

The spell which turns an object into a Portkey, a device which transports the toucher to a desired destination. Latin portus means doorway. Used by Dumbledore in Order of the Phoenix. Portkeys were first seen in Goblet of Fire as a means of transport for Harry, Hermione, and the Weasleys to and from the Quidditch World Cup.

Prior Incantato (MP: 15Cost: 10sp)

Latin for "previous incantation". Makes a shadowy image of the effect of the last spell cast by a wand emerge from its tip. This is called an echo of the spell. The nature of the echo depends on the original spell. The echo of a conjuring spell, for example, is the object conjured. However, the echo of the Cruciatus curse is the screaming of the victim; the echo of an Avada Kedavra curse is the corpse of its victim.
When two wands that share the same magical core are forced to engage in battle, a more powerful reverse spell effect called Priori Incantatem takes place – that is an emphatic form of Prior Incantato. One of the wands will be forced by the other to gradually regurgitate shadows of all the spells it has cast, in reverse chronological order. The echos are stronger as well. For example, the echo of the Avada Kedavra curse is not just an image of a corpse, but a temporary ghost-like representation of the victim which is capable of at least limited communication with living beings present.

Protego (MP: 5 Cost: 5sp)

The Shield Charm causes minor jinxes to rebound upon the attacker. Latin protego means "I cover". Used in Order of the Phoenix by Harry against Snape's Legilimens spell, which enabled Harry to read Snape's mind for a moment and in Half-Blood Prince when Harry verbally uses it to deflect Snape's spell. Possibly a different version of this spell was used by Voldemort to conjure a shield out of midair.

Quietus (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Makes a magically magnified voice return to normal. Used in Goblet of Fire by Ludo Bagman. See Sonorus.

Reducio (MP: 5, Cost: 5 sp)

Makes something smaller. Mad-Eye Moody uses it in Goblet of Fire. Countercharm to Engorgio. (Whether or not Reducio can also be used by itself, rather than countering Engorgio is unknown. If possible it would shrink normal sized items into minature versions of themselves. References in Chamber of Secrets by Arthur Weasley to "shrinking doorkeys" would make this seem likely.)

Reducto (MP: 10 Cost: 10sp)

By casting this curse one is able to disintegrate objects in one's path. It is possible to increase the spell's power, meaning that if you had enough magic support behind it, it could wreak incredible devastation. (In Goblet of Fire, Harry uses it on one of the hedges of the Triwizard maze, and ends up burning a small hole in it; in Order of the Phoenix, Parvati Patil is referenced as being able to reduce a table full of dark detectors to ashes; thus, it must be possible to perform the curse with different levels of power.)

Relashio (MP: 15Cost: 10sp)

Charm probably used to release amounts of force. In Latin relatio means a giving back and relaxo means I loosen. Used by Harry Potter against Grindylows in the second task of the Triwizard Tournament, above ground it ejects sparks from the wand, below water it ejects boiling water from the wand. When used more expertly by Auror Bob Ogden in Chapter 10 of Half-Blood Prince, Marvolo Gaunt is thrown backwards.

Rennervate(MP: 10 Cost: 10sp)

This spell appears to rouse an unconscious person. Used by Harry in Half-Blood Prince. Possibly a cosmetic variation of Ennervate.

Reparo (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

Used to repair objects. Used countless times throughout the books. First seen in the 1st book, used by Hermione Granger to fix Harry's glasses, as "oculus reparo".

Rictusempra (MP: 15 Cost: 5 sp)

Tickling Charm. Though for purposes of this RP the following is an explanation of how it will work
In the Chamber of Secrets movie, Harry used this spell to fling Malfoy through the air and in the game Rictusempra is used to stun people or animals.

Riddikulus (MP: 10 Cost: 5sp)

A spell used when fighting a Boggart, "Riddikulus" forces the Boggart to take the appearance of what the spellcaster is thinking as amusing so that the laughter will weaken it. First seen in Prisoner of Azkaban, the Latin word "riddiculus" means "exciting laughter", "laughable", or simply "laughter". It is pronounced with a hard "c".

Scourgify (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Used to clean something. First used by Nymphadora Tonks to clean Hedwig's cage in Order of the Phoenix. Later, Ginny Weasley performs the spell to clean up Stinksap in the Hogwarts Express. Severus Snape's memory (saved in Dumbledore's pensieve) showed that it can be used to wash one's mouth out with soap. It is derived from scourge confused with scour.

Sectumsempra (MP: 20 Cost: 15sp)

A spell that creates a gash on the victim in the way the wand is moved. Supposition: it projects a cutting field from the tip of the wand, as demonstrated by its fruitless use on the Inferi, and is supported by the wild way Harry Potter swings his wand when using it against Draco Malfoy, causing a variety of deadly gashes across his face and chest. It is first used (possibly) in Order of the Phoenix, by Severus Snape on James Potter, (pg. 647, U.S. edition.) The spell was also used by Harry on Draco Malfoy in Half-Blood Prince. From the latin "sectum" - "to cut" and "semper" - "always." This was invented by the Half-Blood Prince.

Serpensortia (MP: 15 Cost: 10sp)

Conjures a serpent from the spellcaster's wand. Latin "serpens sortia" means snake attack. Used in Chamber of Secrets by Draco Malfoy.

Silencio (MP: 5, Cost: 1 sp)

The Silencing Charm. Makes something silent (a bullfrog and raven were used as examples in the book). First used by Hermione in Order of the Phoenix. Silencio means 'Silence' in Spanish and Portuguese and has its origins in the Latin word "silentium".

Cont...

Sonorus (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Magnifies the spellcaster's voice. Ludo Bagman uses this in the book Goblet of Fire to commentate at events without needing a megaphone, but in the movie, Albus Dumbledore used it in the Gryffindor Common Room. (For the counter-spell, see Quietus)

Specialis Revelio (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

Causes something to show its hidden secrets. Used by Hermione Granger to find out more of Harry's Advanced Potion-Making book in Half-Blood Prince. Severus Snape cast a similar spell, but with different words ("Reveal your secret!"😉, on the Marauder's Map in Prisoner of Azkaban. It also seems to be able to distinguish different ingredients in a potion.

Stupefy (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

The Stunning Spell. It puts the victim in an unconscious state. Described in the novels as a beam of red light. The spell wears off after a short time, or can be countered by Ennervate. Useless on magic-resistant creatures such as dragons and giants unless used at once by a crowd of wizards/witches. Can cause severe injury if many spells are used on a target that is not normally resistant. A variation of the charm was possibly used nonverbally in Order of the Phoenix by Albus Dumbledore to knock out Dawlish, Dolores Umbridge and Cornelius Fudge.

Tarantallegra (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

Makes victim's legs dance uncontrollably (possibly the tarantella dance). Malfoy uses it in the duelling club in Chamber of Secrets. A Death Eater also places the spell upon Neville Longbottom in Order of the Phoenix.

Tergeo (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

A siphoning spell. Hermione Granger uses this spell in Half-Blood Prince to siphon blood from Harry's face, and it's later used to siphon ink, leading the reader to the conclusion it can siphon any liquid. In Latin, "tergere" means "to clean" or "to wipe off/wipe dry."

Waddiwasi (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

Used by Remus Lupin in Prisoner of Azkaban to expel a wad of chewing gum from the key hole Peeves put in and launch it up Peeves's nose. Latin vâde vâsa means "go [away], containers"; Latin vâsa = "containers" was also used more generally to mean "stores, stuff"; the meaning here was likely influenced by English "wad". (The Latin letter V is pronounced like the English letter W.) Specific function not clear. Possibly launches a small "wad" of any sort in the direction desired by the caster.

Wingardium Leviosa (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

This spell levitates objects. First seen in Professor Flitwick's class, when the first years practice the spell with feathers. In the movie, it is used by saying "Wingardium Leviosa!" while making a "swish and flick" movement with the wand. "Wingardium" is a combination of the English word "wing" and the Latin word "arduus" (meaning "steep"😉 and "leviosa", which contains the Latin word "levare" (meaning "ease, lift, pick up"😉.

Alarte Ascendare (MP: 2, Cost: 2sp)

(uh-LAR-tay uh-SEN-dar-ay)
Latin alacre ascendere = or alacritate ascendare "to ascend quickly".
Spell which causes something to shoot up into the air.
Lockhart tries this on the snake during the Duelling Club. It only throws it up into the air and makes it madder in the CoS film

Arania Exumai (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)

"araneus" L. spider + "exuo" L. cast aside
Knocks over or throws back spiders.
Harry used this spell to dispel the spiders attacking him, Ron, and Fang in the CoS film

Arresto Momentum (MP: 10 Cost: 10sp)

"ad" L. toward + "resto" L. stop, hold position + "momentum" L. movement
Slows the speed of a moving object.
Dumbledore used this spell to keep Harry from falling to his death after the Dementors flew at him over the Quidditch pitch in the PoA film

Bombarda (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

"bombus" L. booming, plus English "bombard" and "bomb".
Spell that can blast open a door.
Hermione used this spell to open Sirius's cell on top of the tower in the PoA film

Bracchium Emendo (MP: 10Cost:10sp)

"bracchium" L. forearm + "emendo" L. correct
The spell fixes a broken forearm, unless you do it wrongly. Lockhart gave this a try when Harry's arm was broken, but succeeded only in removing all of the bones from the arm in the CoS film. The subtitles indicate that this spell is written "Brakium Emendo", but the correct Laton speling is "bracchium".

Cistem Aperio (MP: 2, Cost: 1 sp)

"cista" L. chest or box + "aperio" L. open
Opens a crate
Riddle used this spell in the CoS film to open the box in which Hagrid kept Aragog when the spider was only a baby. Aragog scuttled away when the box was opened.

Cont...

Everte Statum (MP: 15 Cost: 10sp)

(ee-VER-tay STA-tum)
"everto" L. turn upside down + "statum" L. fixed, in one place
Duelling spell used to send the opponent flying.
Used during the Duelling Class taught by Lockhart in the CoS film
Flipendo (MP: 10 Cost: 5 sp)
"flip" - E. turn over + pseudo-Latin ending
The spell used to push or topple something.
One of the most useful spells in the video games because it allows the caster to move objects, blast small enemies like pixies, and push buttons set in castle walls that conveniently open doors
Used in the CoS film, Trading card game, and multiple Harry Potter video games.

Immobulus (MP: 5, Cost: 5 sp)

"immobilis" L. unmovable
Freezes objects where they are.
Hermione used this spell to freeze the pixies who are running amok in the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom in the CoS film, but this has not been verified as canon as corresponding to the spell she actually cast in the CoS book, which was refered to only as "a clever Freezing Charm"
Lupin used this spell to stop the Whomping Willow from attacking him when he wanted to go down into the underground passage in the PoA film

Lacarnum Inflamari (MP: 5, Cost: 2 sp)

"lacarnum" L. raincoat + "inflammare" L. set fire to
Ignites a flame.
Used by Hermione in the SS film to ignite Professor Snape's robes.
see also Incendio and Bluebell Flame Charm

Lumos Maxima (MP: 10 Cost: 2 sp)

"lumos" L. light + "maximus" L. large
Generates a brilliant light.
For some unknown reason Harry is risking punishment under the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery by practicing this spell in bed when he should have been sleeping, possibly to generate a light by which to do his homework while the Dursleys are sleeping in the Prisoner of Azkaban film. (There's also, however, the possibility that "Lumos"-type spells don't create enough of a magical signature to trigger the magic sensors that alert the Ministry to illicit magic in Muggle dwellings such as the Dursleys'.) Presumably, this is a more powerful version of the Lumos spell, although see notes for Lumos Solarum for more on the non-canonicity of this concept.

Lumos Solem (MP: 15 Cost: 5 sp)

"lumos" L. light + "sol" L. sun
Generates a brilliant blast of light, as bright as the sun, and may actually be sunlight.
In the SS film, Hermione used this spell to force the Devil's Snare plant to withdraw from Ron.
Alternate spelling: Lumos Solarem

Vipera Evanesca (Cost: 1 SK, MP: 5)

This is a vanishing spell with a Snake target added to the incantation.

The Unforgivable Curses

Use of this curses gives a dark point.
Use of these curses on a fellow human is enough to land any witch or wizard in Azkaban for life. The magic behind each is very powerful, and typically requires a very strong will and desire. For example, to cast the Cruciatus Curse with efficiency, it has been suggested that one must be filled with hatred and the joy to inflict pain, as shown by Harry Potter's attempt to use this on Bellatrix Lestrange in the Ministry of Magic at the end of Order of the Phoenix.

Imperius Curse (Imperio) (MP: 20 Cost: 20sp)
The Imperius Curse starts with the incantation Imperio and gives the wizard complete control over his victim. The experience of being controlled by this curse is described as a complete, wonderful release from any sense of responsibility or worry over one's actions, at the price of one's free will. However, it is possible for the victim to fight the curse: Harry Potter has shown some proficiency in resisting the curse, and both Barty Crouch Jr. and Barty Crouch Sr. learned to resist the curse after being subjected to its effects on a regular basis. Broderick Bode, an Unspeakable, fought against Lucius Malfoy's Imperius Curse, and Hermione speculated that Sturgis Podmore was under the Imperius Curse when he was arrested for trying to force his way through the door to the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix. Madam Rosmerta, the barmaid at the Three Broomsticks pub in Hogsmeade, was placed under the Imperius Curse by Draco Malfoy in Half-Blood Prince, and she in turn placed Katie Bell under the curse for a short time during the course of the book, in order to smuggle a cursed necklace into the school, which was intended for use in Dumbledore's murder. "Imperare" is Latin for "order" or "command".

Cruciatus Curse (Crucio) (MP: 25 Cost: 25sp)
Associated with the incantation Crucio, the Cruciatus Curse inflicts intense physical pain upon the victim. "Crucio" (Latin) means "I torture/crucify", originating from "crux" (genitive "crucis"😉, which means "cross". (In medical Latin in the names of the cruciate ligaments in the knee, "cruciatus" means "arranged in cross shape".)
Several Death Eaters, including Bellatrix Lestrange (and presumably Barty Crouch Jr.), used this curse on Neville Longbottom's parents in an attempt to get information on Voldemort's whereabouts after his killing curse rebounded on him. They received no such information and were sent to Azkaban for their crimes, but the extensive torture drove Neville's parents insane.
Harry Potter tried to use the curse on Bellatrix Lestrange during a climactic fight at the Ministry of Magic, but it did not have much effect — Lestrange revealed that the person performing the curse must enjoy inflicting pain, and that the "righteous anger" Harry was feeling at the time was not enough. This may or may not be true, seeing that Lestrange had nothing to gain from informing Harry and that Harry had no opportunity to practice the curse (so he may not have applied it to maximum effectiveness). In any case, no one but Lestrange saw him attempt to use it, so he has not suffered consequences as a result.
In Order of the Phoenix, an enraged Dolores Umbridge attempts to use the incantation on Harry, but Hermione Granger stops her just in time.
In Half-Blood Prince, Draco Malfoy tries to use the Cruciatus Curse during a duel with Harry, but was interrupted after Harry used the Sectumsempra spell against him. Later in the book, Harry tries to use Cruciatus against Snape, but his attempts are blocked.
(Note that what Bellatrix Lestrange said might be true, so the attempts by Dolores Umbridge and Draco Malfoy might not have worked.)

The Killing Curse (Avada Kedavra) (MP: 30 Cost: 30sp)
The killing curse, incanted Avada Kedavra, causes the caster's wand to shoot green light, which, on contact with the victim, results in instant death. The curse has no known counter-curse: the only defense seems to be dodging out of the way or blocking it with a physical barrier, which is destroyed in the process. The spell does "nothing more" than kill the victim - it forces the life from their bodies in an instant. In other words, there are no side effects aside from collapsing dead.
"Avada Kedavra", unlike most of the spells in Harry Potter, may be derived ultimately from Aramaic. Its usage by J. K. Rowling likely was taken from a description of the etymology of the common conjurers' word abracadabra (which see for more information), influenced by the Latin word cadaver = "corpse".
Certain specific spells or conditions have deflected the effects of this curse: if someone else died unnecessarily to save the target's life (which has to be dispelled by other means); if the conditions exist for the Priori Incantatem effect; or if the target has a horcrux. Only two people have survived the curse: Harry Potter (his mother died to save his life) and Lord Voldemort (he has horcruxes, speculated by Dumbledore to number six, the seventh part of his soul residing in his body). These two survivors, though, have not been killed, but injury was instead inflicted on the two. The scar was left on Harry, and Voldemort was reduced to spirit form, so it is possible that body effects only happen to survivors. The curse is regularly used by Lord Voldemort to kill his victims.
Used by Lord Voldemort to kill Lily and James Potter and attempt to kill Harry, by Wormtail to kill Cedric Diggory, and by the Half-Blood Prince to kill Albus Dumbledore. (See the article on Dumbledore for more information regarding his death.) This curse was first seen in Goblet of Fire when the impostor Moody (i.e. Barty Crouch Jr. in diguise) showed it to Harry's Defence Against the Dark Arts class by killing a spider.
Although this spell has never definitely been observed to have been performed non-verbally, Avada Kedavra is quite probably the spell Bellatrix Lestrange used to kill a fox (thinking that the sound it made might be a lurking Auror) while chasing Narcissa Malfoy near Spinner's End. Avada Kedavra is associated with a jet of green light and the fox seemed to be killed by the same.
Because the spell is very sophisticated and advanced Dark Magic, it could be performed non-verbally only by the most powerful Dark Wizards, Lord Voldemort (during his fight against Dumbledore) and Bellatrix Lestrange (killing the fox).
There are several Harry Potter-related websites whose names contain "avada kedavra".
