Although he is the only artist that I know of that actually worked on that title, I had to mention his awesome talent as an artist in my top ten.
Jim Lee - Superman
Uh, everyone - maybe I'm wrong, but Stan Lee is a writer only. He has never drawn a comic. Put him in the thread for definitive writer.
I see a lot of responses seem to list a character's very recent artist. Do enough people look back some decades to previous work? For all the dozens of artists Wolverine has had for 30 years, I still say John Byrne drew him best, 26 years ago.

Alex Ross and anyone - checkout Justice, simply the best comic on sale!
Writers of course, Alan Moore, Wolfman, Millar... Johns had a really good JSA run. Gaiman. Ostrander.

Agreed, Alex Ross is in a league of his own artistically.
After him I like Perez, then Jim Lee probably.Writers of course, Alan Moore, Wolfman, Millar... Johns had a really good JSA run. Gaiman. Ostrander.
Agreed Morrison, Geffen, Ennis and Bendis also turn it on as writers sometimes. As did Layton and Shooter.
Byrne may be mad but he does both brilliantly sometimes.
