The extra mile (or 1000)

A student skips school and goes to Baghdad as part of a school assignment.

http://edition.cnn.com/2005/US/12/29/teen.iraq.ap.ap/index.html

I just have one question: How in the world is it "dangerous and irresponsible" for that boy to have a long conversation with some men at a local mosque?
(Oh, and the whole going into a place where carbombs are a daily occurance thing was pretty silly too).

Its dangerous becuase he doesnt know their culture and how they live. For instence if I say as a joke "in soviet russia...CAR DRIVES YOU!" or something people wont take it seriously but if i went to Russia and was having a conversation with some russians and said that they might get offended. If the kid says the wrong things then he might be in trouble. Bad analogy I know, but I hope you get the point.

Different culture? He was talking to men at the LOCAL mosque... meaning the one in his hometown before he ever left for Baghdad. They presumably function in the same society as Farris. So I ask again, what's so dangerous about talking to some Muslims in Florida?

You had to have read the article wrong then.. they obviusly arent going to say what you think they did.

"Diving headfirst into an assignment, Hassan, whose parents were born in Iraq but have lived in the United States for about 35 years, hung out at a local mosque. The teen, who says he has no religious affiliation, added that he even spent an entire night until 6 a.m. talking politics with a group of Muslim men, a level of "immersion" his teacher characterized as dangerous and irresponsible.

The next trimester his class was assigned to choose an international topic and write editorials about it, Hassan said. He chose the Iraq war and decided to practice immersion journalism there, too, though he knows his school in no way endorses his travels.

"I thought I'd go the extra mile for that, or rather, a few thousand miles," he told The Associated Press."

This happened the Trimester before he even received the assignment that brought him outside of the United States.

For some reason I don't see how it was such a great danger at all. I mean yes it was an unusual trip for an american teenager but was he really iun danger or does CNN just try to create the impression. And if the father was so worried why did he allow his friends to bring him to Baghdad? Does sound illogical.ö I find it portrtayed in a rather biased form to eb honest. And the so called "wild tales" don't seem to be as wild .... the taxi driver who might have thought aboot punching him, the people in the shop who looked suspicious...boo-****ing-hoo...all jsut propaganda.

And as Zarathustra pointed out, it is more than just outragous what that teacher said. Spending time with Muslims at a local Mosque? Dangerous? Why? Cause muslims are generally evil and agressive? Right on you bigotful racist.

In my opinion, this kid rocks! He's bright, resourceful and commited. I think he should be president.

I would almost agree if he wouldn't respond to the Propaganda of CNN ..... now his essay is just so biased. the whole thing is biased actually.....but I can respect that he had the commitment to do such a thing although I find it vastly exaggerated..

Well, I've not seen him sell out, so I'll trust your opinion. All I've seen is his pic and the story. But, with New Years and all, I've not seen teh news.

I'm thinking that there was a misquoting here. Or at least what the teacher said was either taken out of context or misconstrued.

I read the First paragraph, look up and said "Yup CNN" And Closed the Window.

So Much Words the Modifiy the entire meaning and Mood and Feeling of the artical is just rupulsive.

At least 3 words per sentence they didn't need and only added so it sounds extraordinary.

this guys' parents should be ashamed of themselves.

they knew he was there since two weeks before christmas and made no attempt to get him to come home, despite knowing what he wanted to do

Thats hilarious; he strayed away from his Baghdad Hotel to look for something to eat, found a place and asked for a menu from his Arab Phrase book, in a broken americanized accent and blue jeans, nike shoes and a top.

And everyone was looking at him like he some sort of ghost 😂

This Hassan, should have taken a camera with him. That would have been priceless
