This souce says: Tolkien's painting of an eagle on a crag appears in some editions of The Hobbit. According to Christopher Tolkien, the author based this picture on a painting by Archibald Thorburn of an immature Golden Eagle, which Christopher found for him in The Birds of the British Isles by T. A. Coward. However, Tolkien's use of this model does not necessarily mean that his birds were ordinary Golden Eagles. In some of his texts Tolkien speculated that these great Eagles were actually Maiar in bird-shape, as he felt it unlikely Ilúvatar would grant fëa to animals. If this is true, then Roäc the Raven and the Thrush, who appear in The Hobbit, might also be Maiar or other spirits in animal form (and possibly even Beorn, who sometimes takes the form of a bear).
So if this does suggest that the Eagles were Maiar than naturally they would be strong and powerful. But if we compare it with what Smaug says in the Hobbit:
"My armour is like tenfold shields, my teeth are swords, my claws spears, the shock of my tail a thunderbolt, my wings a hurricane, and my breath death!"
Smaug did have a strong defence system ie his scales and the fact diamonds etc were embedded into his belly.
I personaly think its a tough choice! If i remeber rightly, Smaug does breath fire.......so that woiuld be of an advantage. but then i think Eagles can out fly the Nazgul?!
Im going with Smaug beacuse he seems stornger and there is no material proof that the Great Eagles were Maiar, so we cannot just presume!
