A more correct definition would be that AM means the time from midnight to noon, 0 - 12 so to speak. PM from 12 - 24.
The abbreviations come from Latin words. Ante and post meridian.
Pretty stupid System, but it has some Latin in it. Only for people who can't count to 24 though.
