Hollywood suffered an off year at the box office. George Lucas did not.

Lucas' Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, charting the death of Anakin Skywalker and the birth of Darth Vader, was 2005's top-grossing movie, tapping loyalists for $380.3 million, according to the box-office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations.

The film was the only $300 million-plus grosser in a year in which, Exhibitor Relations said, overall movie attendance fell about 7 percent, and ticket sales dipped about 5 percent.

Sith, ostensibly the final chapter in the Skywalker saga, seemed unaffected by the bad box-office vibes. It now stands seventh among the all-time box-office champs, per the stats at BoxOfficeMojo.com.

With Sith leading the way, Hollywood made a lot of money ($8.9 billion) and sold a lot of tickets (1.4 billion) in 2005, per Exhibitor Relations. It just didn't make as much money ($9.4 billion) or sell as many tickets (1.5 billion) as it did in 2004.

Here's a complete look at 2005's top 10 moneymakers, according to figures compiled by Exhibitor Relations:

1. Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith, $380.3 million
2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, $277.1 million
3. War of the Worlds, $234.3 million
4. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, $225.7 million
5. Wedding Crashers, $209.2 million
6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, $206.5 million
7. Batman Begins, $205.3 million
8. Madagascar, $193.1 million
9. Mr. & Mrs. Smith, $186.3 million
10. Hitch, $177.6 million

Yeah, 'figured it would be standing high above the other major movies.

hell yes😎

yet Harry Pothead will top Sith worldwide🤨

Wedding Crasher is so damn funny, a must watch!!!

Although I'd actually rate RotS as like the 11th best movie of the year, I'm not suprised its made that much.

Shame about Batman not doing too well; Chris Novel has breathed new life into that dead franchise.

The big factor behind Batman Begin's Box Office run was down to the franchises' horrible past lol. A bit like Phantom Menace but the other way 'round i guess.

Since i just generally have no love for Batman whatsoever, i'll never watch any with great interest - although people DO say that this one is great - and i have no doubt of that😉

Very cool read; thanks Priestess! 🙂

Hmm...I paid for ROTS, Narnia, Charlie & Choco, and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and saw Batman, War of the Worlds, Madagascar, and Wedding Crashers on DVD. I need to go see Potter...

What's Hitch?

Anyways, Star Wars nerds win!

Wahoo SW Nerds!

I saw all those movies in theatres except for Batman Begins; I just plain don't like Batman.

And Hitch is the one with Will Smith playing the guy who is the Ultimate Woman Charmer, and he makes a living helping other guys get dates.

Huzza... more money for Lucas! Who cares how much it made.

Dudes.. I just made up such an incredible pun for this topic's title..

Here it comes..

Spoiler:
Shit happens!

WAAHAHAHAHAH!!!!

Actually I do. I wanted it to come out on top for the year as it wont get any other type of award, so 😛

Unless it manages to eeek out a People's Choice Award tomorrow night.

Good for Star Wars, bad for Batman, unfortunly I am also a Batman fan aswell as a Star Wars fan. I was hoping for Batman Begins to do much better at box office because it was a really good movie I thought.

Batman Begins was actually pretty good considering. It had Qui-Gon Jinn as a ninja. 😛

Batman Begins deserved much more than it got. In my opinion it was the second best picture of the year... Kong being the first.

OK Kong was good, but it wasnt the best picture of the year. I just dont see it.

It was my best picture...

"What's Hitch?"

A hysterical movie.

Now see that I understand. ✅ Sith wasnt what I considered the best movie either. Im still trying to decide between Cinderella Man and another.

For me, the Pic of the Year was Wallace and Gromit.
