Illest Lyricist/Battle Rapper

Takeover was a great "battle" track in my honest opinion, but if we're putting him there then we must also mention Nas, who subsequently came back and made Jay-Z look like a complete mug. In retaliation Jay-Z ripped the Got Yourself a Gun beat and did that shitty Super Ugly freestyle over it. Throwing a great first punch doesn't make you a battle MC worthy of praise, staying in the fight with venom does. Jay-Z was done when Nas chose to reply. If we're talking freeing aside from battles or beef then Jay-Z should be up there, if only because he doesn't write down his lyrics and can more or less create them quite effeciently off the top of his head. At least he COULD.

That said, I don't think Nas is a great battle MC per se. They didn't necessarily battle, they had personal issues that made for some entertaining duels.

I don't know about that. I always looked at that beef as a battle, period. Rap battles, freeing or not, mostly stem from personal issues.

Jay-Z isn't a good battle MC or beef MC/whatever you want to call it. Takeover was good but any MC with decent lyrical ability can drop a great first punch. It's no good if your opponent swings back and knocks you out.

Nas was taking swings at Cormega (I think) on that same album and I wasn't too sure it was the wisest choice he made.

-AC

yeah he did (destroy and rebuild)

but it dont matta since mega and nas deaded it last year

and mega will be the first to tell you nas is better than him and he got the deepest of love for that brother

I don't class it as a battle because it was essentially Jay-Z's swing Vs Nas's.

Nas's hit home.

True battles are supposed to be in the spirit of competition, not hype. Not that I have anything against beef tracks, cause the artist is supposed to pour his life into his work, and if he's having conflicts with another artist it does make sense to put that in the tracks as well.

beef tracks nowadays are just publicity stunts, sort of ruined them for me.

its too bad.

exactly why I haven't posted here. They got these kids hyped about a "beef", when it's just entertainment. lol @ Jay-Z and Nas. How many didn't know they weren't going to kiss and make up? Oh yea, the people who buy into those lame antics.

Entertainment or not, I still thought the Jay-z vs Nas raps were ill. Not super-ill but it had me listenin'.

And I didn't care if they kissed and made up or if it was prearranged or not? You think I care about their beef's or whether or not it's a ploy? Man please.

It's for my ears and yourz and we can take it anyway we want. Get it right before you get it wrong, Pad'na

I never said the rhymes were weak. Like I did say, it was entertainment so of course people were entertained. There are just some people that take these beefs too seriously. That is all.

Whoa, relax there buddy. I wasn't directing those comments toward you so there's no need to take it so personal. I was talking about a particular group, but if you're not included then why take what I said to heart?

and of course people can take it however they want. It's not like I own their opinions.

I not saying you said their rhymes were weak, it's just what you said came across to me as the Nas vS Jay-z beef was a show like it was a wack act that fooled people And because it fooled people it wasn't real or not worthy. That's how I understood it.

I assumed you were saying it about me since I was the only one I that mentioned the Jay-z Nas beef as one of the illest a few posts earlier. Then a few posts later you said a whole bunch of stuff about how people are this and this if you listened to it and took it serious and all that...

Im relaxed, im chillin' like a villain, it's never personal it's only debate. Not hate.

@doom

i aint gassing the nas/jay beef, but some people just dont know the impact of it. these are the 2 of the biggest names in hiphop coming from NY, and their both duking it out for being kony. any straight hiphop head would tell you nas was king back then (even after nastradamus), hell even jay knew it, but he was hungry he got the money so now he wants the title. jay feels he can be KONY too, since nastradamus was pretty shitty and nas' moms is sick. lol, jay is obsessed with that shit too, even slept with nas' baby moms (even tho u prolly know this) to get @ nas.

ny was crazy bout this beef shit because we losing the spotlight to the other coasts (midwest/south). altho it did brought NY hiphop back on the scene.. the winner didnt capitalize on that shit, and jay had to take a 2 month vacation away from the country.
it was crazy cuz back in 01 i was living with my moms back in queens (queens blvd, i wont say exact addy cause my fam still lives there) and i know dudes from ravenswood and they saying nas won that shit unanimously, weird thing ravenswood and qb (especially 41st side) got the biggest beef between them. so i was surprised that these dudes showed love during that time.

peace

Word. I'm not going to argue against the Nas and Jay beef anymore because at least they're good artists. But what about the em/benzino disses, ja/50 disses... those are what turned me off to beef's.

Art or competition isn't apart of real life..Art is apart of our everyday lives and competition ever more so.. Makes no sense, Mos Def.

Crush, Kill, Destroy was the most famous one.

I think he's saying that there's more important "beef" out there than two famous people arguing.

pretty much^

like a beef between two people on the street

But what makes a beef important?

I think, in some cases that a rap-battle can probably be more truthful and informational / important more so than 2 congressmen battling on CSPAN about BS.
