What happened to Boromir if he had not tried to have the ring?

I guess he was not able to protect the hobbits. However, Gondor had not stayed without a leader.

It will never happen and was neevr meant to happen! If, in some freakish chance that he had got the Ring, then Sauron wouldve regained it and ruled ME! That sums it up!
