Wouldn't the Senator that was in office, stay until another election can happen? I'm sorry, I don't the ins and outs of politics, perhaps someone more knowledgeable could help us? But I'm pretty sure the Constitution is silent on this issue.

That was my thought, but my mom said that wouldn't happen cause they didn't vote for her, but would she have been like his vice senater or something.

Priestess is right. Martha is going to take on Jonathan's senatorial duties, which will probably be brought up next week.
This raises an interesting question: What will happen to the farm? Clark's in college and is busy saving the world, if not just Lana, and Martha will be a senator. Who's gonna take care of things? Lois?
I for one, vote Lex. In the episode when his brother, Lucas, came in, he seemed to enjoy the manual labor. Plus, he said in Reckoning he wanted to feel like he accomplished something, right? lol, j/k

this situation has actually happened in real life not too long ago and the wife of the deceased senator took the job

You'll see Martha in office in the episode called Fragile if not before then.
