and personal interpretation can also have negative effects, such as people interpreting natural disasters as God's wrath, people saying that God doesn't accept gays, people saying that whatsisface is the antichrist, etc.

Personally, I think the Bible shouldn't be taken so literally, and it should rather be used as a guideline to help us lead better lives.

Others don't share my views, however, and claim that they must do everything they can to enforce what they believe to be God's will.

The fact is that people often use God as a way to pursue their own self-centered agendas. That's why I say personal interpretation is important; so you don't end up buying into the bull...but then again if someone interprets the Bible as saying that we should kill all non-believers...then we have a problem...
