I was bored so I downloaded a bunch of free programs to mess around with from the "Resources" thread. So I guess here's my 'reviews' of them.
ArtRage2 is nifty for painting stuff, but impractical. It would take the full version and loads of time to make anything look good, and I can't save as anything but a pgt (?) which is problematic.
Vickman's Photo Editor or whatever is just not as powerful as Gimp or any of the programs people regularly use. A step up from Paint, but that's about it.
Couldn't get the PS demo to work. 😬
I downloaded Dogwaffle a while ago. Again, occasionally fun but mostly impractical. I've used it on a few random backgrounds for my sigs, but could certainly have done without it. It might be worth it for a few features for backgrounds, but little else.
Apophysis is cool. It creates hundreds of randomly generated fractal-style background images for use every time you use it. Getting it to save as a png for general signature use can be tricky (get the newest version available) but once you figure that out, it's a nice way to jazz up a sig. Limited, but useful.
Paint Shop Pro X was the only one I tried that seemed to have plenty of potential. Again, it was only a demo, so it was a bit neutered from its full version, but there were definitely some cool things I was able to mess around with in only about an hour or so. It's worth the download if you're curious.
Gimp's obviously as good as you're going to do for free, but the full versions of PSP and PS are undoubtedly better. I've also been told it has a steeper learning curve than many programs, though I'd disagree with this, as I picked it up faster than I thought I would and never really felt frustrated with the program.
...
Does anyone know which is supposed to be better for different things, PSP or PS?? They probably both have strengths and weaknesses, but PS seems to be the overwhelming choice for forum members and sig-makers. I'm just trying to gather knowledge in case I decide to purchase something down the road. In the meantime, Gimp (along with occasional help from Apophysis and the PSP demo) is serving me well, but I might be interested in PS if I can find it for a reasonable price.
