HISTORY IN THE COMICS
The first Superman comic, "Action Comics #1," was published in 1938 and from all the Superman's characters we know today, only two were featured in it: Clark Kent/Superman and Lois Lane.
In the beginning, the idea revolved around a super-hero who saved the imaginary city of Metropolis from common criminals. The idea of villains later came from two Canadians, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. They had taken the name of their hero from Nietzche's famous book "The Superman" and in the beginning they did not envision the superhero we know today but a villain who tried to control the world with his powers.
Once they decided to change the character to a super-hero, they needed a love interest for him. They took the name Lois from Shuster's high-school crush and modeled the character after Joanne Carter (a model who had dated Shuster and would marry Siegel in the future), who would later give Lois her middle name.
In the early comics, life wasn't easy for Lois, who had to see Clark get the scoop on the best stories just because she was a girl and her boss considered those stories too dangerous for her. This made Lois a bit resentful towards Clark (who continued to act like a coward when it came to defending her) while she fell for Clark's alter-ego, Superman.
During the pre-crisis era, Superman was supposed to be the real person while Clark was just a cover, so those who claim that Lois was a ***** for loving Superman are a bit off. Many still wonder why Superman wanted Lois to fall for Clark when he wasn't the "real deal."
During the 50's, Lois got her own comic book: "Superman's Girlfriend: Lois Lane." While in the regular Superman comic books, Lois was obsessed with proving to the world that Clark was in fact Superman or to get Superman's attention. While in Lois Lane's book Lois main goal was to cat-fight with Lana Lang for Superman's love and scheming to force Superman to marry her. These books aimed at a female audience and their success made them last until 1974. One of the recurring themes in Lois Lane's comics was the alternate universe where we could find what would happen if Lois married Clark without knowing he Superman, or if Lana Lang married Superman.
During the 70's, Lois continued to ignore Clark (who even began to work in a TV network) while occasionally having the chance to date Superman. This situation continued until 1986 when DC Comics decided it was time for an overhaul of their comic’s .This reconstruction ended comics like "Earth 2" (a kind of alternate universe) in which Superman and Lois had gotten married and had children.
The reconstruction made the Superman comics start out fresh. Clark was sent to Earth after Krypton exploded and found by the Kent’s who would later raise him as their own. Unlike the pre-crisis comics, Jonathan didn't die when Clark was young and Clark didn't become Superboy during his teen years. Clark is the real person and Superman is his secret identity. Lex Luthor also went from being a mad-scientist to a rich millionaire.
Lois and Clark met for the first time while she was in an experimental space plane that almost crashed, but with Clarks help was saved. When they landed, she tried to talk to him but as people surrounded them he escaped. Clark returned to Smallville and talked with his parents about Lois and how he wanted to help people but feared that it would be difficult to do it as Clark. With the encouragement of the Kents, Superman was born.
When Superman appeared in Metropolis Lois was quickly drawn to him. Unfortunately for her when she went to the Daily Planet to give the news that there was a superhero in the city, Perry told her that someone had beat her to it. He then followed suit and introduced her to Daily Planet's newest reporter: Clark Kent.
Of course Lois won't forgive Clark easily and will center her attention in Superman, but, unlike the pre-crisis Lois, she admitted she was attracted to Clark. Over the years Clark earned her friendship and in 1990 he finally asked her out on a date. The first date was a success and they started a romance that eventually led to Clark proposing and Lois
accepting.
Now came the hardest part for Clark:
../Telling Lois that he was Superman.
../Telling General Sam Lane that he wanted to marry his daughter.
After some failed attempts of revealing his true identity, Clark finally told Lois the truth one night after a battle with a villain called Banshee. Lois was hurt and could not understand how she was unable to put two and two together. She asked Clark for some time to consider his proposal. Of course, it didn't take long before she accepted to continue their engagement. From then on, Lois had to accept that she had to share Clark with the world, and the few moments they had would often be interrupted by his duties as Superman.
It was harder for Sam Lane to accept Clark as his future son-in-law. In the comics, Lois is also an army brat who moved around but, unlike Lois, her mother (Ella) didn't die and she had a little sister named Lucy Lane. Though her mother and sister loved Clark, Sam never liked him and always saw him as not worthy of his daughter. Finally, he accepted their marriage; however, he never truly accepted Clark.
During their engagement, Lois had to suffer one of the worst experiences of her life. After a battle with Doomsday (an alien as powerful as he, Clark/Superman died in her arms. Lois never revealed that Clark was Superman and had to suffer in silence, only comforted by the Kents. She continued her career as Clark would have wanted as a tribute to him (even writing the news about his death).
Months later, Clark reappeared after being healed by a healing matrix. Prior to his return, there had been some men who had claimed they were Superman (including the new Superboy, a Clark/Lex clone), so Lois was skeptical until he kissed her and spoke the same words he had spoken before his final battle with Doomsday: "Remember: no matter what happens, I'll always love you".
Happily reunited, the couple continued their engagement until a girl from Clark's past “resurfaces,” Lori Lemaris. Lori was a mermaid whom Clark met in college. They were in love and he even proposed, but she returned had to return to the sea. Clark and Lori flirted and even kissed during their “reunion” period and Lois decided to break the engagement since he didn't seem to have time for her.
After spending some time abroad, Lois decided she couldn't live without him and returned to Metropolis to find that Clark, de-powered, had been looking for her. She made him propose again and they married in a church with all their friends present.
After they got married, Clark and Lois had to face many obstacles, like the many returns of Clark's past girlfriends. Lana Lang (Clark's high school sweetheart) even named the baby she had with Pete Ross after him. She was currently trying to convince Clark that Lois was a ***** who (unlike Lana) loved Superman not him. Clark became angry with her, though he didn't defend Lois. Meanwhile Lois is abroad, covering a war for the Daily Planet and, in the latest issue of Superman, she was shot. Clark heard it from Metropolis and caught her before she fell to the floor.
