in ultimate x-men#1 has button on his wrist that he pushes that fires off a blast against a sentintal

Another theory to account for firing his blasts is that it has a cybernetic part to it. Much like Falcon's or Nighthawk's jetpack controls, or Iron Man's armor controls.

I would be in favor of him having a sensor in his glove that would open the visor somehow, too.
