Signature 'Advice' Thread

Can someone please give me some advice on this? What is wrong, or needs to be fixed, etc. I use GIMP, btw.

I dont know if I am allowed to ask for render advice in here, so if I am not supoose to I am sorry.

This is my first render, and I know its sucky. But can any of you give me tips on how to improve or point out where I went wrong?

I like the second one better than the first one but from a purely "how it looks in general" point of view they both look quite good. What do you plan on using them for?
