They haven't stated yet that it's the symbiote costume. However, they have stated it's a black costume. That isn't the symbiote costume. What I think, though, the most logical reason is, like I said, the poster is symbolic in a way. While it isn't the symbiote costume, Sony has stated it's a black costume. Why not simply say it's the symbiote?
No, I believe that possibly the "black" costume, as Sony has put, could be showing that Peter may be getting the symbiote costume sometime in the movie. The costume may neither be the original nor the symbiote, but it may be showing the struggle between the two.
This, to me, sparks the most interest. Number one, it would explain the black of the costume in conjunction with the likeness it shows to the original costume. I highly doubt that if Venom is going to be in the film, as well as the symbiote costume, it will be the same as the original, except black. Number two, it would allow Sony to safely state that Peter is wearing a "black" costume, and not simply come out and say it's the symbiote. This way, they will be able to later, say, "Oh, well that wasn't the symbiote in the poster. We didn't say it was, anyway. We said it was a black costume."
I believe this is probably the most likely of situations, excluding the idea of this poster simply showing the original costume, designed to spark controversy (which I still believe it is.)
Do you really think that if the symbiote costume is in Spider-Man 3, it will look like this? An exact replica of the original, except in black?
No, Raimi isn't that stupid.
They probably thought we'd understand what the black was for and didn't think some of us would be so doubtful. They didn't actually call it the symbioite cause it's still too early to be releasing solid information on that sort of thing. Sandman being confirmed was by pure accident on Kirsten's part. So by releasing this, they're giving us something, but not everything.
And about the sym suite looking the same as his normal suit...yes..Raimi is that stupid. He never liked Venom and is probably taking as much of the story his own way as possible. We should be happy we're getting Venom at all though, right?

If Raimi is that stupid, well, then... you can't blame me for hoping that isn't the symbiote costume. 😬

of course not! Nobody is blaming you, not even me lol...I am hoping this isn't gonna be the symbiote costume spidey will constantly wear...but I believe that the reason it is black is because the symbiote will have contact with him in the third film. Maybe it will look like this in the beginning cause it is imitating spider-man's costume only in black...I don't know, just guesses...I also hope that they certainly come up with something more creative/similar to the comics.
What about this photo. It looks cool. Please post your comments.

Originally posted by TheKahnThey made Spiderman look cool on screen, they made a middleaged overweight guy look cool as Doc Ock, but they're just not trying with this one. i think ,if that is the alien costume, it makes more sense, the one in the comics looked cool, but it would be like a skin tight suit with a white logo, that wouldnt look to cool on film, and if that is true, how the hell are they gonna do carnage?
