Is punk rawk the new hair metal?

Ok, I'm not referring to bands that fit the traditional definition of punk, hardcore or new wave (DK's, adolescents, blondie, germs, nirvana, garbage, PiL, DI, TSOL, Wasted youth, black flag, big black etc.). I'm talking about the new mainstream prepackaged crap like blink 182, yellowcard, avril lavigne, good charlotte, and all this aweful emo crap that take the worst things about sonic youth and amplify them. All this crap (self proclaimed "punk rawk"😉 has about as much to do with punk rock as laurence welk.
so i pose the question. Just as hair metal became an excessive cartoon in the mid to late 80's is the same true of punk rawk now?

Punk rawk can't be the new hair metal because punk rawk doesn't exist. People use the label but it's not applicable to anything really. You mean these new wave of pop bands posing as rock and/or punk bands.

In answer to your question, no, it's not the new hair metal. It's just another current thread of pop that's become a trend.

No, because hair metal was fun and cool, Punk Rock is annoying and screechy.

Hair metal was about having a good time and excess. They were pop-metal, because even though not all the music was what you would call "metal," it's not exactly "pop" either. And hair-metal is still listened to today, but within 20 years, these pop-princes trying to be punk will be long forgotton.

These pop dudes basically screech excessively about their dads running away and some guy that makes fun of them.

meh, i see no difference at all. same excess and macho stupidity. especially when football players get mohawks and straight edge becomes a christian movement with a penchant towards violence. Now punk is a generalized sound pioneered by greenday that can best be described as a very watered down hybrid of the circle jerks and DI.
Punk was better when if you wanted to hear "poppy" music you could listen to the dead kennedys and adolescents sing about the failures of democracy, and when you were feeling sloppy you could listen to flipper rail about how life sucks but is also wonderful and the only thing worth living for or the crucifu(ks rant about how reagan should be decapitated.

iteresting sidenote, the crucif*cks were a fairly obscure band who violated the law by threatening the presidet of the united states but didn't get harrassed by secret service. Why is this surprising? their songwrite and singer, Doc Corbin Dart is the son of the founder of a vast banking enterprise and one of the richest men in america. His grandfather invented and patented sticky notes.
