Lost in translation, I assume? Yeah, it was quite good, not brilliant though. Mainly because it was pushed so hard in that direction by the makers, rather like Hemingway's writings.

mhmm. what got me irked tho, was the use of cultural differences for humor. it was fine overall. poignantly amusing but sometimes went a bit overboard.

Well cultural differences are a massively defining issue in society, it should be O.K to laugh about, well, anything should be.
I think the humour you saw wasn't merely there for humour though, it served to show the huge similarities in the personalities of the characters, yet also their unfamiliarity with both the environment, and themselves. They're essentially lost souls searching for a kindred spirit, where there seem to be none.
