I love the level of knowledge of Batman displayed here. Punky, it's clear you know almost nothing of the work of Batman. If you even look back to batman of the 60's and 70's and even up until the 80's until Frank Miller did The Dark Knight it was almost nothing but cartoonish. The characters like The Riddler, The Joker, The Penguin, didn't even start off as serious characters until Burton put a shred of darkness of it (BTW, I know The Riddler wasn't in a Burton flick, but I'm talking about the whole Batman universe.). I like Batman Begins, but to say Burton didn't do it the way it was envisioned is silly because Burton was one of the people who helped turn Batman into a serious character.

the very early comic books are utterly irrelevant tho. every superhero then was cartoonish.

burton did make batman "dark", but AFTER stripping the character of its very essentials.

it was Bruce Timm who took the hint from Burton's failed attempt at Batman and finally did the character justice. 😄

How the hell is the 80's very early? By the time it was the 60's-70's Batman was already 20-30 years old. Only in the past like 20 or so years has Batman been a truly dark character. Also all this talk about failed attempts and "stripping the essentials"; why don't you elaborate?

Burton didn't fail. He did a pretty good job with what was available at the time in my opinion. Batman and Batman return were both pretty well done in my opinion. The two Batman sequels after those were a bit overdone, and lacked and artistic touch.
