Mine the early 90's cartoon as well, some very good joker episodes.
There was one cartoon episode showing where he learned how to pick locks/escape methods an disappear quickly an quietly as a magicians apprentence.
Lets see some japanese training(kiodie) where he 1st learned his self defense techniques before the league of shadows an Ra. Maybe add some league of shadows/Ra training flashbacks of some stuff we didnt get to see in the 1st film as well.
Also I think the costume would look a 1000 times better if they made the mask not show his irisis just like the comic and make the mask eyes of his cowl blank white. Say its some sort of vision enhancement or something.
More gritty realism, an the joker had better be scary, evil, an menacing from the start.
If there is gonna be robin, make it like the kid tries to just join batman on his own without batman knowing an gets killed his 1st time out by the joker, that might work.

3. Harvey Dent to replace the "love interest" section of the film. If they MUST have a love thing going on, make it Selina Kyle and don't cast Angelina Jolie, her lips will take up too much of the screen. Cast Kate Beckinsale.
4. If Joker is the main villain, then have him at his best. If he isn't the main villain, don't put him in at all, and put him in #3. Don't shortchange Mr. J
5. Cameo by Scarecrow in the beginning, being captured.

8. More of a loving relationship between Bruce and Alfred. They argued more than they should normally do.
9. No more explanation of previous things. That was what the whole first movie was about. He should be comfortable in his career by now.
10. Gordon to become Commissioner, or at least move up another rank.
11. More cameos of smaller villains and characters, like Lyle Bolton being a guard at Arkham, a Dr. Hugo Strange cameo, possible Dr. Harleen Quinzel cameo, maybe Summer Gleason.
12. A reference to Metropolis and Superman. Something small, like show a character reading the Daily Planet and one of the headlines being like "Superman blah blah blah".That's enough for now.
With Returns out, yeah, I'd like to see a reference to ole' supes. And I agree with your point on Joker. If you're gonna' have him in there, do the character right, or not at all. Beckinsale as Selina? Sure. I'll go for that.

As a follow up to last year's blockbuster Batman Begins, Christopher Nolan is set to direct Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight, written by Jonathan Nolan, based on a story by Christopher Nolan and David Goyer. The film will be produced by Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan. Additionally, Christian Bale will resume his role as Bruce Wayne and Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker. The announcements were made by Jeff Robinov, President of Production, Warner Bros. Pictures.
