odin found out that when he released the trapped members of mangogs race, mangog did not go away. he was now feeding on new outside sources.
and it was never said that mangog got killed by thor. just knocked out. for the first time ever.
and remember what it took to even hurt him.

It wasn't Thor. It was Thor, with Odin's power, the belt of strength, and the armor of Jagrfelm, shot down Mangog's throat.

Thor was basically just the transportation for all that power that wasn't his.

I believe that even if Gog himself told you that Mangog was too much for him, you'd tell him he was wrong, even after seeing footage that he got his skull cracked by Mangog. Did you read anything about Mangog Mider?
