The Keyblade is an ancient artifact (not much is known about it) with the ability to open not only conventional locks (I don't know whether he key is the Keyblade's natural form) but essentially allow the bearer access to anything and anyone. The keyblade originally chose Riku as its master, but as Riku was swallowed by darkness before the Keyblade could reach him, it journeyed with his friend Sora until it could be reunited with Riku. When Sora and Riku next met, however, Riku had been corrupted by the darkness, and so Sora became the true Keyblade master.
Multiple incarnations of the Keyblade have been seen in the two games, including the "dark Keyblade" Riku had that could unlock the power in people's hearts, Riku's "Soul Eater" which turned into a Keyblade sometime between Chain of Memories and KH2, Roxas' dual Keyblades, the second keyblade that Sora wields in his Valor, Master, and Final Forms, and the Keyblades that have been used by King Mickey and Kairi in the past. Sora's and Roxas' Keyblades are the only ones containing all of the blades powers, I think. 😐
