AC, i know you might not be able to reply to this yet (may not be online) but, how many names are smokers called for smoking? i'm not trying to say smokers shouldn't get offended by someone telling them not to smoke and neither am i saying you shouldn't tell someone who is fat to "lose weight", but what words do you hear smokers being called? if you were fat and was working (really working) to lose weight, you would feel kinda frustrated when someone comes up to you and said "dude, you're fat". this isn't something new to you and you are trying to get rid of it. you shouldn't have to "get used to it" cause someone thinks its their "right" to point it out. i may be missing your point of view on this, but if you had a flaw you could change, and you were working to change it (takes a while to pull crap out from under your skin), you would get a little tired of trying to fix yourself if when you went on everyday life someone told you about your shortcoming.

This is all based on the premise that "fat" is a word invented to make fun of people.
It's not, it's a condition. If you are fat, and someone calls you fat, they are telling the truth. The bluntness of their comment may very well be unwelcome and brash, you would have every right to complain that they offended you. However, don't act like fat is solely some derogatory term, it's not. You are fat if you are fat, whether you like that or not. Whether you like being CALLED it or not, you are fat.
I doubt Jessica Simpson likes being called unintelligent, but it's exactly what she is. Just like a fat man or woman is fat.
You're putting the cart before the horse there. If you're going to get offended, get offended at something you have the right to be offended about. Not "Hey you called me fat! That's not true!" When was the last time you heard of ANYONE saying "fat" as a diss, when the said dissee (if you will) was thin? Never. It's always because they are actually fat. No matter how brash or rude the comment is, if you call a fat person, fat...you're not speaking falsely.

There we go then. Get offended at the fact that someone has chosen to comment on that which doesn't concern them, don't maintain this attitude of denial that you're all of a sudden not fat.
Believe it or not, the question asked on the first page was: Why do fat people get offended when they are called "fat"? The answer can be one of two things:
A) Because you're offended that someone spoke on something that didn't concern them, with or WITHOUT the intent of insulting you.
B) Because you're in denial.
If it's B, tough shit. You're fat, fact. I'm not saying you deserve to be insulted, I'm saying that don't dig yourself deeper into the hole.
Furthermore, this:
"but if you find it neccesary to point out the obvious (i am fat, a personal shot at my being)"
It's not always a personal shot. If someone says it innocently as a pure observation and you take that as an insult, that's your problem.
If you go to a doctor and he tells you that you are fat or obese, WITHOUT you asking him to, are you going to b*tch? No, because it's true. If it's said without intent of being insulting, as I say it to my aforementioned friend, then you have no reason to get offended. When I call him fat, he doesn't get pissed, despite knowing it.

Originally posted by Alpha Centaurinow we have an understanding. took a while to get past the bull crap. of course if you came to me and said "dude you're fat, you should look into getting some help.", i would say "uhm ok, i am actually doing that.....now who are you?". if it were a doctor who said i need to lose weight, i wouldnt get mad because it is his professional opinion of my health. but if someone were to come to me in public (they mostly hollar and run) and say "hey fatty, you're fat!", i would be angry. see our views are actually the same here. i think if someone comes to you and says that you are fat and need help, if you do get mad its because you're too damn lazy to do something about it and you should get your overweight ass kicked by a wrecking ball. but if someone comes to you and calls you fat for the hell of it, you have every right to get angry. now wether or not you act on your anger is up to you.

think about this. you are his friend. if you call him fat, he wouldnt get mad cause he knows you. if i call him fat, he may have a different reaction, cause i dont know him and he may think i am trying to down him. besides that, if i dont know you, i probably wont talk to you anyways...

Someone calling you fatty, or even just using the word "fat" for the hell of it, wouldn't be speaking falsely if you were actually fat though. That's my point.Would they be wrong to make the comment? I can't say I agree with their choice to do so, but does that mean what they say is false? No.

as you know, our society has set a standard for what is acceptable and/or pleasing to look at. it has placed that being fat isnt an accepted fad. you said so yourself that you wouldnt get angry if someone were to call you skinny, but that is the accepted look by our society. if someone were to call you skinny, it would be hillarious to look at them and call them a fat retard for being that dumb.
now in saying that, the reverse would occur when being called fat. it is not an accepted fad as stated before to be fat. when someone comes to a fat person and calls them fat, it would be hard to laugh it off if the person feels self-consious about that wether they were trying to lose weight or not. i think the question shouldnt be why do fat people get offended by the truth. the question should be why are you concerned about my feelings to the point that you would get angry when i either ask you or tell you not to tell me what i dont want to hear.
A) Don't speak out against insults and speak for being angry when you are insulted, if you are also speaking about how hilarious it is to call someone a retard. Strike one.
B) Stop missing my point, it's very simple. Forget angry, forget WHY they're saying it. If you are fat, and someone calls you fat, then they're not speaking falsely, is my point.
C) That's not the question though. The question is; "Why do people get offended when they are called fat?"
The answers are one of the two options I displayed before.
I'm not entirely sure what else you're aiming to get at. You don't want to be insulted, fine. However, people don't make fat jokes unless the person is factually fat anyway, usually. Which is the only point I made.
