Mothers in the Movies
Hi i'm a final year student at Leeds University in England and I am writing an essay for my final year project on Mothers in film and I would be grateful if anyone had any opinions on how the representation of mothers has changed. You could perhaps do a chronological approach, where you span the beginning of when films were first produced to the current period we're now in, and take some good examples out of the different time 'eras' and do a bit of analysis. Also adding in the context of when the film was made e.g. the 60's having mums represented towards a more hippy way could help show the backdrop of the time.
Just my 2 cents on it though 😮💨

Mothers have gradually moved out of the kitchen to more ass kicking roles.

It is my impression that, in the last several years, most of the actresses have been younger than the characters they are portraying (ie, a 35-year-old actress portraying a 40-45 year-old mother). If this is the case, it is yet another subtley damaging message sent out by our Celebrity Society (brought to you by such profit-driven juggernauts as the Diet and Fashion industries) on how the "modern woman" should look.

I agree with this observation. Anyone else thinks that Smallville mothers over forty are required by law to be MILFs?
