Church has been working for the past 13 months on another expected blockbuster, the eagerly anticipated "Spider-Man 3." Church was offered the role of the villainous Sandman in January 2005 but was sworn to secrecy by director Sam Raimi about revealing anything about his part. The two have since become good friends, and Church was brought directly into the creative process.

"Sam and I started having really involved sessions about who the guy was," Church says. "Clearly, it's taken from the fourth issue of 'Spider-Man,' which was when Sandman was introduced and which I now have framed on my wall."

Church is still sworn to secrecy regarding plot details (he might want to consider moonlighting as a CIA agent), but he wants to let fans know they won't be disappointed.

"I'm overwhelmed every time I'm around Sam," Church says. "He's been showing me [stuff] since the beginning of last summer. 'This is what we are going to be doing in this sequence, this is what Spider-Man is going to be doing and this is what Venom is going to be doing.' It is a massive, massive process."

Nothing though, prepared Church for what occurred when Sony Pictures released the first image of him as the Sandman on the web.

"They gave me a stack of printed out [posting-board mentions], and it was too much," Church says of the massive pile. "We were all sitting around like going through it and it was all like, 'Dude, that picture of Sandman rules! Church is perfect for the part!' [It makes me] think it's really the biggest superhero franchise."

Church might have thought the "Sideways" Oscar campaign was intense, but wait until this ride takes off.

"Spider-Man 3" wraps production this June.

Looking forward to see Sandman is part 3. 😉

Just to see how into this church is makes me happy as a fan. No matter how much money someone pays you for a part in a movie , you have to enjoy what you are doing and be a fan to hang the comic on the wall.

PS
Yet another venom confermation.

Well I have always liked Sandman. I love the fact that they are using classic bad guys.

Now if it's wraping up in June why is it not being released until 10 months later? That makes minimal sense. Some but minimal.

Hopefully Sandman will rock. hopefully

There were a lot ( and thats putting it mildly) of sandman haters on these forums. I hope they will see part 3 and admit that they were wrong. I'm surprised they are going to introduce venom so soon, they have a lot of classic characters yet to use. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to part 3. 🙂

they are not introducing venom too soon...i woulda liked a set up fro him in spidey 2..i mean cmon..everyone loves venom...i think hes the most like n reconized villain in spider-man...its never too soon to bring in venom!!! 😠

just kidding i aint mad 😉

I still doubt he will officially be in 3. Maybe Venom takes out Sandy in the end, leaving Pete to wonder what happened...

The problem with venom is that you can't rush it. If venom is in part 3, and maybe part 4. Where do you go from there? Everybody knows venom but once his saga is done, people may not want to watch movies w/o him. Not anybody on here, but regular non comic fans. Its just a theory. If they take their time it will build up more suspense.

They'll build it up. You can't have a two hour movie about a story that took a few years to make. I mean, they have the ability to, but they CAN'T!
