he almost ended the world and no not anyone could stop him WW had to talk him out of it he made it so the world would war with each other and thus destroy itself so ww pointed out the fact that if it died no one would believe in him and thus he would die
he took zues of his throne once i think
he can controll any weapon
it took darksied to stop him by having time and space grab him and hold him still other then that no one on earth could stop him.

Has Ares ever fought anyone at the comic level with powers comparible to Surfer's? I'd say, if Darkseid can subdue Ares, then he can't be far enough out of Surfer's league to give him total majority odds.

Some are weaker, some aren't. Most mythological gods (not New Gods) in DC seem somewhat godly, whereas the average god in Marvel is basically a Class 25-Class 50 superhuman.
Ares seems to be near the top of the food chain as far as mythological gods go (Athena might be equal or slightly above and Zeus was probably equal or slightly above when he was King of the Gods).
Ares was powerful enough to kill Highfather and Hades (granted both were sneak attacks) and out-classed WW to the point where she had no chance of harming him.
He has also proven powerful enough to increase his size to at least planetary size.
Even so, I was exaggerating when I said Silver Surfer would get turned to ash. He might be able to survive one blast, but I doubt he'd be conscious.

That was "godly" Darkseid who was more powerful than most pantheons, not the Darkseid who got beat up by Superman.

Ares takes this easy. He is just below Zeus. DC Zeus = Marvel Odin. They are the most powerful of the patheon gods in their respective universes.
