Could Reese of been lying to Sarah, pretending to be the father of John?

You mean pretending he didn't know that he was John's father? It's possible. Of course that would mean that Reese is much slyer and more manipulative than we thought. It puts a whole new spin on the scene just before John is concieved.

i dont think reese knew..or did i miss something because i remember in one of the novels before reese left for the past john called him father etc.
