The common thread of all meditation is consciousness/attention focusing on itself. In purest form, this involves a focus which, for some, can be too intangible to grasp, so aids are used, aids which range from the very concrete (eg, your breath), to much more subtle (eg, a visualization).
Also, what you focus on, and what you believe, will affect the form of what you experience.

It depends on how deeply you pray. I knew people how would pray for hours.
