Looked somewhat interesting (no more so than any other of those kinds of RPG though) but it seemed to get really mixed reviews when it first got released so I mostly lost interest.

How you finding it?

It's pretty shitty.

It had some good ideas but they were very poorly executed.

Mandatory boss fights in a game where you can totally ignore combat skills? Good idea!

Deus Ex?

It does have problems yeah.

But I thought I'd bring it up with Astor since he clearly prefers story and stuff over gameplay.

Also, you can ignore combat skills yeah, if you're stupid. Most of the classes start you with points in at least 2 combat skills.

Deus ex HR. Greatest game ever.

That is indeed a big problem with HR.

Its actually pretty great and totally different from most RPG's. Its really good so far at making me feel like a spy. And there's a big focus on dialogue. Your dialogue choices really effect how people perceive you and what information you get, but you have a limited time (basically as soon as the other guy stops talking) to chose what to say. So you need to make quick decisions to manipulate the conversation. And to help you you can get a hold of dossiers on everyone to read their psych profiles and see what they respond well, or badly, to. It really does feel like you're manipulating people, its great. Its shaping up to be a really engaging system.

The writing is top notch so far, as expected from Obsidian.

I prefer the mass effect get a gist of what you say over the pure tone response system in AP.

That does sound pretty cool actually.

I guess everyone has different tastes. I've yet to find a better overall game than HR and the Assassin Creed games. To me, it's all about the immersion.

According to Neph this game called Braid is and I'm inclined to agree.

MGS is by far the best out of the mainstream games.

Darth Sandbag?

Bastion. Bastion was awesome. Can't wait for Transistor.

Though Journey is still quite possibly my favorite game of all time, eclipsed just barely by Ocarina of Time, though from an artistic and emotional standpoint Journey is definitely my favorite game ever.

As much as I liked Journey, I think its success has a lot to do with the fact that the majority of gamers weren't aware of how amazing indie games could be artistically and emotionally, and Journey was the first game of that kind that they experienced. And perhaps it was the most accessible one that a regular gamer could get into, especially as an introduction to the genre. I think it's probably a bit of both.

This looks amazing:

Well I got it for £2 on Amazon so its super cheap if you're ever interested.

Witness seems abit meh to me. Nothing there that pulls me in and makes me think 'Oh, I'd buy that, yeah'

I mean, wtf is going on?

Well I'll admit, 99% of my hype for the game is based on how good the creator, Jonathan Blow's first game, Braid was, which was just about as close to perfect as any game gets. The creator is an absolute genius that just gets game design, and knowing how good his first game was, and hearing him talk about this game, can't help but get any Braid fan excited.

I do think the game itself looks good though. It's visually stunning, and I really like the concept behind it, which is basically a non-linear puzzle exploration game set on an uninhabited island, where every puzzle is interconnected, and you basically learn about the story of the island through a language that the puzzles communicate. If you knew of the cool and crazy ways Braid was able to tell a story and communicate a message through the use of gameplay and the game's internal logic, you'd be a believer too.

I've played Braid. I enjoyed the logical puzzles and twists and all, and the very MC Escher way things looked and whatnot, but this one.. I'm just not feeling it. Maybe when it's out and I see what it's like a little more, I might change my mind, but I doubt it.

Don't get me wrong, I like Braid, it's a pretty cool game, it just wouldn't be on my list of best games, really.

Fair enough, I can understand needing to see more about the game/waiting for reviews, but I think you can certainly expect it to be good.

And yeah, Braid isn't going to be everyone's favourite game, but you've gotta admit that it's pretty unprecedented in how many boxes in ticks. It looks beautiful, it sounds beautiful, the gameplay is incredibly well designed and intricate, and the story is incredibly mature, beautifully written, and just as labyrinthine as its gameplay. And its crowning achievement is that it manages to combine those features together to communicate an artistic message that only a videogame ever could. There isn't another game I can think of that touches you emotionally, blows your mind intellectually and haunts you with its story.

It's literally what you'd get if you combined Portal with Journey and the movie Memento, and scaled everything down to 2D.
