But at what point was that even possible?
It's only possible if you disregard everything prior to the films, which is what nu!canon is doing. In Legends EU, it's not really possible for a unified Sith empire to have occupied the galaxy and ruled from Coruscant.
But if you read old Lucas interviews, in his mind, the Sith ruled the galaxy ages ago and were overthrown by the Jedi and wrote the dialogue of the films accordingly.
It's still a haphazard timeline, though.

I reiterate my previous point about how star wars is a joke. I used to think it was as good as LOTR. Now I don't think it's even close.
The LOTR are pretty hard to compete with imo, even though I prefer the story of Star Wars. LOTR has a pretty impeccable intersection of story and execution. {The Hobbit films are pretty lackluster, though.}
Anyway, I'm totally fine with them wiping out the extant EU since most of it sucked anyway. But only as long as what's replacing it is better.

1. It won't be better. It can only be worse.
It may not be better but not because it "can only be worse." Most of the old EU was pretty bad. They've got the talent to write consistently better stories but only if the Story Group actually supervises.

2. I'm not ok with it since everything I've read the past 10 years is essentially meaningless.
You're not alone in that boat. But it doesn't really change anything because the good shit you read is still good and the bad shit you read was still bad.

What is lords of the sith?
A novel about Vader and Sidious.

Once again, it appears that KOTOR, anything dealing with the Ancient sith, Revan, etc are all non canon.
Yup. And with the lone exception of KOTOR, nothing you mentioned is a real loss to the continuity.
You're crazy. KOTOR was a very successful EU project, but EU fans are vastly outnumbered by casual film fans. Episode 7 is a zillion years ahead of KOTOR with respect to interest.
