Another thing that should be noted is that rituals are typically represented as an act that requires intense and total concentration, we see this when Zannah attempts to dominate Bane's mind, we see this when Lord Kaan and his followers perform Force bomb ritual, and we see this when Vitiate and 8,000 Sith Lords mediated for 10 days.And you know what else? According to the Darth Nyriss the Nathema ritual we see seemingly reenacted on Ziost was "the most complex ritual of Sith sorcery ever attempted", which previously required the combined ability of 8,000 Sith Lords to accomplish. And I'd imagine making a mistake would have catastrophic and certainly fatal results.
The point being? This is not the kind of thing you attempt, by yourself, while simultaneously dominating the minds of an entire planet, millions of minds, many of them powerful Force users, and instructing them to do you're bidding, occasionally taking direct control. It just doesn't seem feasible that even Vitiate, as a spirit, could juggle to such momentous tasks, and spare the time for some quip and gloat. It should have demanded his full concentration.
And you know what else? The whole dominate the entire population of Ziost shtick was a ploy designed to restore his lost power, because he remained weakened, how is Vitiate supposed to begin such a ritual that he shouldn't even have the power to yet perform? Did he take out a loan from the Bank of Force or something? Seems unlikely.
Far more likely therefore that it wasn't a ritual, that the Sith Emperor was just gathering power and when he had enough, he let the protag leave and them proceeded to kill the planet with a simple exertion of energy. But if it was a ritual? I think we can give Vitiate a pass considering he was dominating the minds of millions at the same time.
