Depends on what you like. If you've played any of the Elder Scrolls games its very similar except with shooting. You explore places for loot or quests, get into random encounters and shoot things. The quests, dialogue, role playing and companions are leagues better than any ES game though. Sneak Gun builds are always the most effective.
New Vegas is the best, yeah. If you're interested just note that you probably should follow the very clear direction the game wants you to go in until you get to Vegas (stay on the road basically). Also you want to go guns instead of lasers. House is the best ending, screw the Legion. Boone is the greatest companion in any of the games, period.
If you go with F4, pick up anything with ceramics, adhesives, screws and I think rubber? Decide if you want to build or not. Don't feel you need to do any of Prestons "go help x settlement" quests unless you really like building things and micromanaging. Love Codsworth. You don't really need to be careful with using power armor, you'll be swimming in fusion cores 20 hours in.
The old ones are fun if you can handle that style of gameplay and the age barrier.

Skip it. Open World games have been pushed forward dramatically over the past few years and the Bethesda formula has become very stale and boring.
And if you want a good Obsidian game, look at their more recent offerings like Tyranny and Pillars of Eternity.

Damn, should stick with it. It's a pretty good game. I love FO3, but objectively speaking, 4 is probably the best in the series.
Not sure if it is gonna get better for me as well or I'm simply not compatible with this game.
