I sort of respected it for being different and real artistic for like the first 20 minutes but ever since then it's just been really repetitive and the story's way too minimalistic and slow moving and generally just boring. I've only played like two hours of it anyhow but I hear it doesn't change too much in that regard.
The story does pick up iirc, especially if you listen to all the recordings you pick up. One of the best aspects of the game is trying to piece together the mystery of what exactly happened to Rapture. Just like the gameplay picks up after the first time a Big Daddy cockslaps you. But yeah, aside from the above and actually managing to sneak a plot surprise past me its incredibly overrated and rife with so many flaws it ends up shooting itself in the foot. I had to force myself to be scared of the atmosphere and that went out the window at about the time I first set someone on fire with my mind.
I have to say, one thing I will give Bioshock is that they have created one of the most badass figures I've ever come across in the Big Daddy. The Big Daddy/Little Sister/ADAM relationship is also very intruiging. And the concept of Rapture is great and Andrew Ryan's monologue are pretty awesome. To be honest I would have preffered it if they made Boshock more along the lines of something like Metal Gear Solid with a defined main character rather than the silent protagonist and frequent, long cutscenes rather than the in game and minimal story elements. Trying to use the game world itself to subtley tell the story is something I can respect, but ultimately something I don't think is very effective.
