Revan
Revan's story, as dictated here, is the plot of the computer game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. But is also a true Star Wars Legend.

Gender
While Revan's gender is specified by the player, the Real Revan is Male. Also, The New Essential Chronology and the Chronicles of the Old Republic, published prior to the release of The Sith Lords, both refer to Revan as male.

In KOTOR II, if the player chooses not to define Revan's gender during an important conversation with Atton Rand, the game sets Revan to a light-side male by default. However, it is notable that Atton, at first, apparently assumes Revan to be female. This may well have been a genuine mistake, or just an attempt to hide his past.

Alignment
Although the player of the game may have Revan end up as redeemed Jedi or a renewed Sith Lord, the canonical ending has him returning to the light side. This follows the usual practice of LucasArts, where the canonical storyline of all videogames ends in victory for the light.

Saber forms
The player can choose which fighting style is used by Revan in the game, either duelling or Form X Jar'Kai. In The Sith Lords, the Exile has a vision of Revan fighting in a Jar'Kai stance. However, the main reference to Revan's fighting style is in the first game's cinematic when Revan is confronted by Bastila and two other Jedi on his flagship. In this cinematic, he wields only one lightsaber. Most possibly because he could not get to his second lightsaber or it was destroyed in a previous battle or he through it and wasn't able to retrieve it.

Lightsaber color
While Revan's lightsaber color is selectable by the player (and corresponds to the character class the player chooses - green for Jedi Consular, yellow for Jedi Sentinel or blue for Jedi Guardian), the true color is blue, as shown in the comic Shadows and Light during Duron Qel-Droma's vision. This color likely corresponds to the powerful Mantle of the Force crystal Revan obtains during his quest for the Star Forge. This crystal produces a cyan blade.

Dark side ending

The proposed alternate "dark side" ending:
Accepting Bastila's offer, Revan struck down the Jedi Jolee Bindo and Juhani, the stain of their blood on the temple stone symbolizing Revan's return to power. He returned to the Ebon Hawk and explained the absence of Jolee and Juhani to his stunned party. Shocked by his return to the dark side, Carth Onasi fled, leaving Mission Vao to be mercilessly struck down by Revan. (Alternatively, Revan used mind-dominate to convince Zaalbar to kill Mission.)

Flying to the Star Forge, Bastila used her Battle Meditation to thwart the Republic fleet, allowing Revan to penetrate the depths of the Star Forge to fight with Darth Malak. Striking Malak down, Revan regained his rightful place as Dark Lord of the Sith. The epilogue cut scene of the game now occurs on Top of the Rakatan Temple.

Using the resources he now commanded as Master of the Star Forge, Revan created an infinite fleet that rolled forth to crush the Republic. So That is obviously the false alternative because the Republic still stood for the Star Wars Movies of all things to take place.

Revan was a fallen Jedi and Dark Lord of the Sith. He lived around the years 3,963 - 3,956 BBY; roughly 40 years after the Great Sith War and the fall of Exar Kun. Revan sought what many considered to be the complete annihilation of the Galactic Republic, a tendency later followed on by his apprentice Darth Malak.

Early Life
"Revan had a mother and father, parents, ancestors, like all Jedi do. And when he awakened to his potential, I was there to see it. But where he was born, where he came from, I do not know... anymore than I know where he walks now. Some said that Revan was born in the Outer Regions, beyond the Rim, and that's what called to him during the Mandalorian Wars... and after. It was the call of home."

Details of Revan’s early life are shrouded in mystery, though it is suspected that he was born beyond the Outer Rim. Whatever his origins, it can be assumed that his exceptional strength with the Force was discovered at a young age and that he was inducted into the Jedi Order soon afterwards.

Jedi Training
"At one time, Revan was my Padawan. In times past, long ago. But Revan, when he had learned all he could, had other masters... that fool Zhar, and other Jedi on other planets. He learned from each."

Possessing an insatiable appetite to learn, Revan was schooled on number of different planets by numerous Jedi Masters during his youth, Kreia, Kae, Dorak, and Zhar Lestin being among them. This love of knowledge did not go unnoticed by the elder Jedi, yet most dismissed it as simple exuberance, seeing in Revan a future champion of the Jedi Order.

There is also a distinct possibility that Revan sought knowledge of ancient Sith Magics during his time as an apprentice, as Master Vrook Lamar seemed convinced that he had done so. Whatever the validity of these accusations, however, after his corruption and embracing of the dark side, the general consensus amongst the Jedi Masters on Dantooine was that Revan had been a promising Padawan, yet also headstrong, proud and far too quick to dismiss the dangerous lure of the dark side.

The Mandalorian Wars

At the start of the Mandalorian Wars, the Republic Military was in desperate need of assistance and petitioned the Jedi Council for aid, but the Council refused. The scars from the recent Sith War still ran deep and the Council was reluctant to charge into another conflict so soon after the last. They also sensed that there had to be something amiss about the whole situation, as though the true threat had not yet presented itself, yet not all the Jedi were willing to accept this stance of apparent inaction. Since rising to the rank of Jedi Knight, the charismatic and powerful young Revan had developed a sizable cult of personality - being a figure of admiration and awe amongst his peers. When the devastating events of the Battle of Cathar became widely known, Revan rebelled against the Council and sent forth his call to arms. Hundreds of Jedi, Padawans, Knights and even some Masters, rallied to his seemingly noble cause.

Revan’s entrance into the war marked its turning point as he steadily began to push the Mandalorians back. Praised as heroes of the Republic, he and Malak were rapidly promoted until they were given complete control over a third of the Republic's fleet. Revan’s clever military strategies and obvious tactical ability were hailed by many as the salvation of the Republic, while others admired Malak’s courage and fiery determination to win at any cost. Together, they liberated Taris, fought Cassus Fett - Mandalore's primary strategist - at Jaga's Cluster, and eradicated much of the Mandalorian army at Althir.

Even so, some few became concerned by the cold and calculating methods that the Jedi were willing to implement in order to attain victory. Though Revan’s tactics were flawless and Malak’s righteous fury was unmatched, the pair began to mirror the Mandalorians they were fighting. They grew to despise weakness and indecisiveness in all its forms. At some point during the war, Revan was scouting for bases along the Outer Rim when he learned of Malachor V, a planet that the Mandalorians were “forbidden” to step foot on. Upon the surface, he was nearly destroyed by Sith energies, yet such was his strength of will that he was able to feed on and not be consumed. He survived the encounter, but unlike many who were tainted by the dark side Revan did not let his actions be directed by the dark side.

Revan soon discovered the Trayus Academy, an ancient relic of the ancient Sith Empire. What transpired in the heart of that dark place is unknown – what is certain is that there Revan discovered the continued existence of the Sith Empire, long thought defeated during the Great Hyperspace War, and the threat that they still presented to the galaxy. He came to the conclusion that the Republic as it stood was ill equipped to defend the galaxy from such a potent enemy and, as such, a new government would need to rise in its place, an empire founded upon the Sith teachings. He would attempt to save the galaxy through conquest. In that black moment, Revan fully abandoned the teachings of the Jedi. He took up the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith and became Darth Revan.

On Malachor V, Revan eventually uncovered historical traces of the Star Forge, a relic of the Infinite Empire of the Rakata, and an instrument of the dark side capable of producing vast fleets by harnessing the power of the stars. He soon realized that he had discovered the means by which he could rapidly conquer the Republic and prepare it for the coming attack of the ancient Sith. At last, Revan forced a final confrontation with the Mandalorians over Malachor V. He planned to unleash a device (the Mass Shadow Generator) invented by an Iridonian technician in his service, Bao-Dur, on the planet – thereby wiping out the majority of the Mandalorian fleet as well as those Republic forces and Jedi who were not fervently loyal to him. He trusted the device’s activation to a capable Jedi general (later known as the Jedi Exile) whilst he did battle with Mandalore himself.

The Jedi Civil War
"The Jedi Civil War destroyed the Jedi. By the war's end, barely a hundred Jedi remained. Many fell in battle... and many more were seduced by Revan's teachings."

After the slaying of Mandalore and the victory at Malachor, the Republic praised Revan as a hero and saviour, yet the Sith teachings were already sweeping through the ranks of those who had followed Revan to war.

Revan and Malak took the remainder of their fleet and disappeared from the known Galaxy, claiming to be searching for the remnants of the Mandalorian Fleet. In reality they were searching for the Star Forge. For many months they were believed lost, though there were scattered, unconfirmed sightings of Revan and Malak on planets across the galaxy.

A year later they returned to known space, at the head of a massive Sith invasion fleet, having reformed the former Republic forces who followed them into a militaristic imperial force, a new Sith Empire.

Revan's campaign, while bloody, was orchestrated to topple the Republic while doing little damage to its underlying industrial infrastructure. Under his leadership, Sith forces bypassed militarily vital planets that would be required for the defense of the Galaxy against the threat of the True Sith. Revan's plan was to keep the Republic largely intact for the purposes of post-war rebuilding. As such, he could begin his rule with a relatively functional military and economy rather than starting from scratch. Also, had he failed in conquering the galaxy, the end result would be much the same: a stronger Republic, more capable of defending itself.

Revan pioneered new Sith tactics relying on secrecy rather than brute force. His Sith Assassins quietly flooded into the Republic from their base on Malachor V to kill and abduct Jedi throughout known space. Revan reestablished strongholds and academies upon worlds of ancient power such as Rakata Prime, Dxun, and Korriban. In these dark places, his most faithful servants broke captured Jedi and converted them to the dark side. Revan also utilized assassin droids, such as HK-47, to eliminate threats to the stability of his fledging Sith Empire.

With Revan at the helm, the Sith forged vital alliances to expedite the support and deployment of their forces. They conspired with the Czerka Corporation, one of the richest and most powerful galaxy-spanning companies of the time, to amass much needed resources and they secured diplomatic relations with the ocean planet of Manaan so that they were able to export the healing agent kolto.

Revan and Malak separately knew of the Star Forge's almost sentient nature. It wanted to exist and was willing to go to any lengths to keep itself "alive". Whereas Malak, like the Rakata before him, allowed himself to be corrupted by it utterly - one could almost say that the Star Forge actually took control of him, Revan minimised his exposure to it. Also, Revan didn't want to become over-reliant on the Star Forge; once its existance was exposed to his enemies, it would become the number one target hence a strategy of trying to capture planets rather than eradicate them.

The reinvigorated Sith won battle after battle, until a young Jedi named Bastila Shan entered the fray with her Battle Meditation. This powerful Force ability increased the combat effectiveness of the Republic's forces and sapped the will of enemy combatants. Even with this power, however, the Republic forces knew that they could not hold out forever against the Sith. In a desperate attempt to end the war, the Republic set a trap for Revan and Malak, during which Bastila and a team of Jedi boarded Revan's flagship and managed to corner the Dark Lord on the bridge. Undoubtedly one of the most powerful Sith Lords of all time, it is likely that Revan would have defeated Bastila and the remnants of her Jedi strike force.

However, Darth Malak chose that moment to attack his master's flagship, attempting to kill both Revan and Bastila at once. He fired upon the flagship from a nearby battle cruiser, but was unsuccessful in killing either his master or Bastila. In the ironic turn of events, Revan succeeded and failed at his task to destroy the Sith at that time. Unexpectedly betrayed by Darth Malak, Revan's plans were quickly quashed by his brash and violent apprentice, who sought to destroy the Old Republic entirely. It was only chance, or the Force, that kept Revan alive.

Bastila Shan was the only remaining member of the Jedi strike force to be left standing, after the turbolaser blast rocked through the bridge. Upon regaining her wits, she was confronted with the broken body of Darth Revan. The Dark Lord was nearly dead—by Bastila's own admission, just a tiny spark of the Force remained alive within him. For whatever reason—perhaps a sense of duty to the Republic, pity, or a simple urge to save his life—young Shan took the decision to grab a hold of that waning spark and keep Revan alive. Through that act, Bastila somehow tied Revan's life to her own, unwittingly forging a powerful Force bond.

Revan, though, was still in a critical condition and his mind remained heavily damaged. Bastila brought him to the Jedi, where his broken mind was reprogrammed by the Council to conceal the Dark Lord's old identity, while enabling Bastila to draw out Revan's subconscious memories, in order to find a way to defeat the apparently endless Sith fleet. Using his slowly-returning memories, Revan was accomplishing his original tasks.

Search for the Star Forge

Revan, under an implanted name, with no recollection of his real history or even of his mastery of the Force, was enlisted as a common soldier in the Republic army and placed under Bastila's command on the Republic warship Endar Spire. Malak, thinking his master dead, devoted all his forces to the hunt for Bastila. In orbit over the world of Taris, the Endar Spire was attacked by a Sith fleet and destroyed. Bastila managed to escape to the planet's surface, followed soon after by Revan and fellow Republic soldier Carth Onasi. The Sith blockaded Taris, intent on capturing Bastila. They were unaware that the young female Jedi had already been taken prisoner by a swoop gang called the Black Vulkars, who intended to give her to the winner of an underground swoop racing tournament as a slave. Revan eventually succeeded in rescuing her when he infiltrated and won the tournament. In orbit, Darth Malak, deciding that the search for Bastila was taking too long, gave the order to destroy the entire planet. Positioning themselves in strategic positions, the ships of his fleet unleashed a devastating planetary bombardment that wiped out nearly all life on Taris's surface. Revan, Bastila, and Carth, along with their newfound crew, barely escaped in time aboard the Ebon Hawk, formerly the personal spaceship of the late Taris crimelord Davik Kang, whose estate they had infiltrated in order to steal the Ebon Hawk. Davik tried to stop the theft. However, the fight occured amidst heavy Sith bombardment, and Davik was killed.

Revan and his companions fled to the Jedi stronghold of Dantooine, where Bastila convinced the Jedi academy council to retrain the amnesic Dark Lord in the ways of the Jedi. After Revan completed his unprecedentedly short formal training, he and Bastila were sent to investigate an ancient stone structure. Inside, the two uncovered an ancient artifact known as a Star Map, a relic of the long-forgotten Infinite Empire of the Rakata. Though the Map was not complete, it pointed the way to the worlds of Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, and Korriban, on which more Star Maps could be found. Only with the combined information of these five worlds would Revan be able to discover the location of the mysterious Rakatan artifact — the "Star Forge".

Revan, Bastila, and their companions journeyed to these worlds, tracing the steps Darth Revan had taken years before. On each planet, the powerful dark side aura of the Star Maps had created perilous conditions that made access to the Maps difficult. Additionally, the crew of the Ebon Hawk found themselves hunted by Sith and bounty hunters, and confronted with the problems of the local populace at every turn.

As the crew attempted to reach the fourth Star Map (including the one on Dantooine), Revan and his allies were captured by the Sith flagship Leviathan. They managed to escape from their holding cells, but, as they fled toward the Ebon Hawk, Revan was confronted by Darth Malak, who revealed to him his former life as the Dark Lord of the Sith. A vicious lightsaber duel ensued, culminating with Bastila's capture by Malak. Revan was forced to deal with Malak's revelation and his loss of Bastila as the quest for the Star Forge stepped up, until at last it was found in the home system of the ancient Rakata.

After gaining the support of this race, Revan was forced to confront a fallen Bastila. Following weeks of torture at Malak's hand, Bastila had at last given in to her hate and had fallen to the dark side. She was now, she claimed, the Dark Lord's new apprentice. His original apprentice, a former Jedi named Darth Bandon, had previously been slain by Revan during the search for the Star Maps.

Atop an ancient Rakatan temple, Bastila attempted to entice Revan to reclaim his former title of Dark Lord of the Sith. This was the climax of the quest for the Star Forge, and it ended with Revan, once again, making a choice that would change the fate of the Galaxy.

Revan made the choice of a Jedi, rejecting Bastila's temptation. Enraged, Bastila retreated to the Star Forge. Revan and the crew of the Ebon Hawk pursued her as a Republic fleet commenced an assault of its own.

Aboard the Star Forge, Revan almost single-handedly defeated nearly endless waves of Sith soldiers and Dark Jedi, displaying his incredible power in the Force and mastery of the lightsaber. Revan faced off against Bastila once again. After defeating her, he attempted to convince her to return to the light side by drawing on the powerful bond of love that had formed between the two during the course of their quest. He succeeded and Bastila used her Battle Meditation to aid the Republic now. Finally, Revan again confronted his old friend and apprentice, Malak, in an epic lightsaber duel, while the Republic fleet, now no longer hindered by Bastila's Battle Meditation, continued its bombardment of the Star Forge. During their duel, Malak continually sucked the life-force from Jedi held in stasis to replenish his energies, but even this was not enough to defeat Revan. Revan, instead, freed as many of the Jedi as he could and allowed them to become one with the Force, and shortened Malak's supply of energy. At last, Malak was cut down. Before his friend's death, Revan apologized for starting him down the dark path, even though Malak had continued down it willingly. Malak accepted his apology, realizing that he had no one to blame for his fate save himself. Thus Darth Malak, Dark Lord of the Sith, died, his life ending in darkness and regret, and the Star Forge was destroyed.

Into the unknown
"Savior, conqueror, hero, villain. You are all things, Revan... and yet you are nothing. In the end, you belong to neither the light nor the darkness. You will forever stand alone. "

A year after the defeat of Malak and the collapse of the Sith Empire, Revan left the Republic, having remembered the remnants of the ancient Sith Empire he had rediscovered as the Dark Lord. Hoping to put an end to the threat it posed before it could attack the weakened Republic, Revan bade farewell to the nine comrades who had accompanied him on his quest, knowing that none whom he loved could safely accompany him in the places he had to walk.

He entrusted Carth Onasi with the Republic's safety, and said goodbye to Bastila. "It would have been better," Kreia would later remark, "if he had made her understand. But she was always strong-willed, that one, and did not understand war as Revan did." Then Revan disappeared, leaving the Ebon Hawk with T3-M4 and HK-47 on Malachor V, on the edge of Known Space.

In the canonical light side ending of Revan, he can persuade Bastila to redeem herself from the dark side. When Revan fell in love with Bastila before they were separated on the Leviathan, Bastila kissed Revan, though she felt it was best if they were not distracted and to stay on course with their mission. When Bastila asked Revan to strike her down when Revan defeated her on the Star Forge, Revan refused and told Bastila that he loved her. Bastila also loved Revan even dreaded to hear those words, yet also she yearned to hear them. She turned away from the dark side and used her Battle Meditation to aid the Republic, because if she came with Revan to face Malak, she could turn on Revan.

Bastila Shan was a gifted Jedi that became one of the key figures involved in the Jedi Civil War and she was also one of the few Jedi to survive the purge that followed it.

Bastila's Story...

Early life
Bastila was born on Talravin as the only child of Helena Shan and a hunter whose name was not preserved by history. Like all Jedi of the time period, she was separated from her parents at a young age to begin her training, but Bastila quickly proved to be an exceptional Jedi Sentinel.

She was gifted with a natural Force power that would gain her considerable renown later in life: Battle Meditation. It was a rare skill that increased the morale of her allies in battle and reduced her enemy's will to fight. It alone would make Bastila an irreplaceable asset in the Galactic Republic's plans to defeat the Sith during the Jedi Civil War.

As a young Padawan, Bastila refused to join Revan and Malak's rebellion against the Jedi Council in the early days of the Mandalorian Wars and she warned her fellow Jedi against doing so. Later, when those same Jedi returned as Sith during the Jedi Civil War, she became one of the most active supporters of the old Jedi Order, as opposed to the increasing number of Jedi who joined the ranks of the new Sith Lords.

"The Force fights with me!"In 3,957 BBY, the Jedi Council sent a strike team, which Bastila was part of, aiming to capture Darth Revan, the Dark Lord of the Sith. Her team had just managed to corner Revan on the bridge of his flagship when Darth Malak, Revan's apprentice, unexpectedly betrayed his master and fired on the vessel. Revan's mind was damaged in the attack, but Bastila managed to save his life, thereby forging a powerful Force bond between the two. The Jedi brought Revan to the Jedi Council and they opted to reprogram him with a new identity that was loyal to the Republic in the hopes that, with time, his submerged memories would cast some light on the many mysteries concering the Sith invaders.

After the apparent death of Revan, Darth Malak had crowned himself the new Dark Lord of the Sith. He knew that the Republic armadas had been saved from certain destruction, multiple times, purely because of Bastila's skills in Battle Meditation. One of his primary objective quickly became the assassination or capture of Bastila Shan. He almost got his wish when his fleet overwhelmed and boarded her flagship Endar Spire during a Sith ambush over the world of Taris. A recovered Revan, assumed by everyone—including himself—to be a simple Republic soldier, had been assigned to the vessel where Bastila could keep an eye on him. Bastila, Revan, and Carth Onasi were forced to evacuate the ship in escape pods just before it was destroyed. Crashing into the lower levels of Taris, Bastila was apprehended by a Taris swoop gang known as the Black Vulkars. She later revealed that she was easily captured by them because her lightsaber had been misplaced during the crash, much to the amusement of her comrades.

After a fruitless quarantine and search of the planet, Darth Malak ordered Admiral Karath to destroy it in the hopes of riding himself of Bastila once and for all. The urban centers of Taris were utterly obliterated in a hail of indiscriminate turbolaser fire, but Bastila and her party managed to escape and flee to the Jedi Enclave on Dantooine aboard a smuggler vessel named Ebon Hawk which they had "borrowed" from a local crime lord named Davik Kang. There, Bastila convinced the Jedi Masters to retrain Revan in the ways of the Jedi.

Soon after, her party discovered a partial Rakatan Star Map in a collection of nearby ruins. It was an artifact that had been discovered by Revan and Malak five years earlier. Its data, when combined with that from four other such Maps, could reveal the location of the Star Forge—an ancient factory of immense power that was being used by Malak to build the seemingly infinite Sith fleet. The Dantooine enclave council sent Revan on a mission to find the Star Forge and stop Malak, with Bastila guiding him along the way.

A Sith Apprentice

During their many adventures, Bastila was again captured, but this time by Darth Malak. After subjecting her to torture, Malak eventually succeeded in forcing Bastila to give in to her hate and fall to the dark side. She became the dark lord's apprentice, replacing the slain Darth Bandon. In time, she would reunite with Revan atop the Temple of the Ancients on the world of Rakata Prime, but their meeting was far from happy. Bastila attempted to persuade him to reclaim his former title of Dark Lord of the Sith, but Revan would not be swayed.

Revan made the choice of a Jedi and rejected Bastila's pleas. After an intense lightsaber duel, Bastila retreated to the Star Forge, where she and Revan eventually faced off a second time. Even though her powers were continually renewed by the Star Forge, Bastila found herself unable to defeat Revan. Beaten at last, she begged the former Dark Lord to take her life, but he refused. Instead he persuaded Bastila to denounce the dark side and return to the light by drawing on the bond of love that they shared. Redeemed, Bastila used her Battle Meditation to turn the tide of the battle in the Republic's favor, allowing the Star Forge to be destroyed after Revan had slain his old friend Malak in single combat.

Back on the Light Side
After the battle, Bastila and Revan, along with their companions Carth Onasi, Mission Vao, Zaalbar, T3-M4, Canderous Ordo, Juhani, HK-47, and Jolee Bindo, were honored as the saviors of the galaxy.

Despite this seemingly happy ending, Revan and Bastila were not destined to remain together. A year after the Star Forge's destruction, Revan recalled a great threat to the galaxy that he had discovered as the Dark Lord and he set out alone into the Unknown Regions. He left all those whom he had loved behind for he knew that to take them to the places he had to go would bring destruction to them all.

Kreia, Revan's former master, would later comment on his abandonment of Bastila, saying that "It would have been better if he had made her understand. But she was always strong-willed, that one, and did not understand war as Revan did."

Before Revan and T3-M4 left known space, Bastila programmed T3 secretly to return to known space and find her should something happen to Revan. Should T3 be unable to locate her, the droid was to find any Jedi who could help. At some point, this command became active, and T3 discovered the Jedi Exile.

Bastila remained behind with the rest of the Ebon Hawk's former crew, keeping the Republic safe as Revan had asked them to and waiting for the day when he would return. In the aftermath of the war, as Darth Nihilus, Darth Sion, and G0-T0, among others, hunted the few remaining Jedi, she was one of the few to escape their notice. When the Jedi Exile—the new owner of the Ebon Hawk—left known space to search for Revan at Carth Onasi's request, Bastila was the only known surviving member of the Jedi Order, with the fates of Revan, the Exile, Atris, Juhani and Jolee Bindo remaining unknown.

Personality and Traits
Bastila possessed all the qualities that separate those special few destined to leave their mark on history, but her very youth and determination were always threatening to become that which eventually consumed her.

Brash, impulsive, and somewhat overconfident (thanks in no small part to the rare gift that was her Battle Meditation), Bastila seemed to walk invincible through her world, though that was hardly the case. Bastila was well aware of the responsibility that pressed down on her shoulders. Her Jedi Masters urged her to be cautious, but Bastila turned every fiber of her being towards defeating the Sith menace and proving herself to the Jedi.

Bastila's relations with the Jedi Council and the Jedi Code were complicated. During the Mandalorian Wars, she trusted the Council's wisdom, neglecting Malak's proposal of joining the fight—and years later, when the Jedi Civil War was at its culmination, still believed it was the right decision. Nevertheless, she thought the Jedi Masters were self-absorbed and stodgy—not to forget edgy, critical and overly secretive. Bastila thought the Council intended to use the quest for the Star Forge to test her abilities and determine if she was worthy of the rank of Jedi Master—only to discover that she was, in the end, not ready.

Bastila tried to follow the Jedi Code as strictly as possible, to the point of expressing even more radical views than some Jedi Masters—she believed that nobody deserved death without a chance of redemption, a belief that would later result in Revan's return to the light side. However, she was not always able to suppress her emotions, and sometimes disregarded the very idea that love should be outlawed among the Jedi. Seeing Revan climbing up the path of the light apparently without any trouble or internal struggles made her question her own devotion to the Jedi Code, even though she and Revan agreed to prevent each other from diverging from that course—and the development of this self-inconfidence later played no small part in her eventual downfall to what she feared most: the dark side.

Bastila preferred wearing a tight and flexible full-body suit, kept in the color scheme of the traditional Jedi robes, however she did wear a typical Jedi robe over it at times. Especially Ceremonial.

Malak

Malak was a Jedi Knight who fell to the dark side after being corrupted by Sith teachings during the Mandalorian Wars. At the end of that conflict, he and his friend Revan led their combined military forces into the Unknown Regions where they founded a powerful new Sith Empire to challenge the fragile Galactic Republic. After he became a Sith Lord, Dark Malak served for a time as Darth Revan's apprentice, but he was best known for his brief and brutal tenure as Dark Lord of the Sith during the Jedi Civil War circa 3,959 - 3,956 BBY.

Early life
Little was generally known about Malak's childhood and many details of his past, including his planet of origin, would remain a mystery. His first entry in the annals of recorded history placed him on Coruscant as a young student of the Jedi Order. During his time there, he befriended a fellow Padawan named Revan. Revan and Malak were extremely gifted and they forever sought to expand their knowledge of the Force during their years of training. It was not be long before they earned a sparkling reputation as rising stars of the Jedi Order.
While Revan and Malak were under the tutelage of the Jedi Master Zhar Lestin, they were known to ambitiously seek out other masters for additional training. Zhar would later remark that such thirst for arcane knowledge should have served as a warning sign that all was not right with their prized pupils, yet by the time of the Mandalorian Wars, Revan and Malak had been promoted to the rank of Jedi Knight.

Jedi Knight
When the Mandalorians began a massive invasion of the Republic in 3,963 BBY, Revan and Malak grew restless. They wished to aid the ailing Republic in its war effort, but the Jedi Council urged patience. As Mandalorian atrocities began to mount, Revan could restrain himself no longer and Malak was the first to join his rebellious cause. The two powerful, popular, and charismatic Jedi defied their Masters and led a large faction of the Order to war – bent on defending the Galaxy alongside the Republic.
The two Jedi Knighs proved to be extremely capable commanders in the field and they rose swiftly through the ranks. Soon, they were given direct control over one-third of the entire Republic fleet. Revan and Malak used their new-found authority to spearhead the Republic war effort and under their inspired leadership, the all-but-defeated Republic Navy began to push the Mandalorians back. The Jedi Masters, however, believed that Malak and Revan were only offering easy solutions to the galaxy's problems and they feared that much woe would result from their recklessness.
As the war dragged on, Revan and Malak began to take certain moral shortcuts – committing several "unsavory" acts, such as leaving "non-strategic" planets completely undefended in order to accomplish the "greater goal" of speedily winning the war. They adapted to their enemies' merciless tactics by simply co-opting them; fighting fire with fire. In time, they developed a cold and calculating disposition uncharacteristic of Jedi. They grew to despise weakness and indecisiveness in all its forms. Though Revan’s tactics were flawless and Malak’s righteous fury was unmatched, the pair slowly began to mirror the callous Mandalorians they were fighting.
Revan and Malak lead the Republic to victory after victory. Finally, during the final battle of the war they defeated the Mandalorians and slew their leader, Mandalore the Ultimate above Malachor V. After ending the Mandalorian Wars with a crushing victory, Revan and Malak led the remainder of their forces into the Unknown Regions under the pretense of tracking down the remaining Mandalorians, but they did not come back and sent no word of their whereabouts. In time, the Republic feared them lost in some tragic disaster.

Sith Apprentice
Corrupted by the ancient Sith energies of Malachor V, Revan and Malak fell to the dark side and indoctrinated their followers with the teachings of the Sith, twisting the allegiance of the Republic forces under their command. In the following months, the fallen Jedi scouted numerous Republic worlds as they completed a survey of planets that they had learned were once under the dominion of the mysterious Infinite Empire. On Dantooine, Korriban, Manaan, Tatooine, and Kashyyyk they found ancient Star Maps that would lead them to the secret location of an ancient Rakatan superweapon known as the Star Forge.
From the bridge of the Star Forge, hidden in the unmapped Rakata system, Revan and Malak founded a new Sith Empire. Revan became 'Darth' Revan and christened himself Dark Lord of the Sith. He chose his old friend Malak as his apprentice and Malak reluctantly assumed the lesser role in a grudging acknowledgment of Revan’s strength. A year after their apparent disappearance, Darth Revan and Malak returned to known space at the head of a massive invasion fleet. Calling themselves the Sith, they declared war on the Republic.
Using persuasion and violence they wrested control of a large space fleet from the Republic and began their career of conquest. One of Malak's early actions in the war was to order Saul Karath to destroy Telos IV, forever earning the wrath of Carth Onasi and other surviving Telosians. As the Jedi Civil War progressed, the ambitious Darth Malak began to chafe under Revan's dominion and began to eagerly await an opportunity to replace his Sith Master.

Dark Lord of the Sith
The moment came when a Republic strike team, led by Jedi Padawan Bastila Shan, staged an assault on Revan's flagship. In an attempt to slay the powerful Jedi and his master at the same time, Malak ordered his ship's guns to fire on Revan's ship. Malak believed that Revan was dead and assumed command of the Sith Empire, at last taking the mantle of Dark Lord for his own.
While the war against the Republic was going very well, he feared Bastila's rare gift with Battle Meditation, a Force power that enabled her to strengthen the Republic forces' resolve and coordinate their fighting effort while sapping the will of their enemies. Her skill with this ability surpassed even the masters of the Order, making her a grave threat to the entire Sith war effort. Darth Malak expended tremendous resources in an attempt to locate and capture her.

Malak nearly succeeded when he blockaded the planet Taris. Although he had the planet destroyed to prevent Bastila's escape, she nonetheless was able to return unharmed to Dantooine accompanied by her rescuers. Among these heroes were three citizens of Taris, Mission Vao, Zaalbar and a Mandalorian named Canderous Ordo; Republic pilot Carth Onasi; the utility droid T3-M4; and Revan himself, his mind reprogrammed as a crewmember from the Republic cruiser Endar Spire. It was Revan who had raced in a hazardous swoop tournament in order to free Bastila from the clutches of one of the street gangs of Taris.
Bastila and her companions left Dantooine in search of the source of Malak's power; the Star Forge. While on their search, Bastila was captured by Malak. Malak tortuned Bastila with Force lightning and finally corrupted her to the dark side of the Force. Malak made her his new apprentice, replacing his previous one, Darth Bandon, who was slain by Revan in a recent battle.
It was not surprising that Malak's fate would be bound up tightly with Bastila's. The two were very much alike -- courageous, arrogant, and heedless of the warnings of their Jedi instructors to beware the call of the dark side. But the true reason Malak chose Bastila for his apprentice was the unimaginable advantages the Sith Empire could gain from her Battle Meditation.

Death
Finally, reaching the end of their journey, the heroes on the quest for the Star Forge called in the Republic fleet to attack the Sith. For a while, it looked as if Malak would be able to destroy his foes in a single, glorious day. Fate — or the Force — handed Malak a stunning defeat, however, and it would be he who would die when his former master, Revan, returned; during the battle, his old master boarded the Star Forge in the Ebon Hawk, defeated an attack force of Forge droids, slew nearly the entire pool of Malak's Dark Jedi and Sith apprentices, and finally killed his old friend in a lightsaber duel.
And so it ended as Malak somehow always knew it must: in darkness.

In the end, Malak's story was a tragic one. He was one of the most gifted and respected Jedi in their Order, and had a lifelong friend in Revan. But by taking the path of the dark side, which, ironically, Revan started him down in the first place, he lost that respect and friendship in a mad quest for power, trading them in for fear, hatred, and eventually death. But even after years of the corruption of the dark side, Malak was not entirely evil.
As he lay dying, his mortal wounds dealt to him by his best friend, he couldn't help but wonder, had their positions been reversed, if he would have possessed the strength to return to the light as Revan did, and what his life would have been like had he been able to do so. He tried to blame Revan for his fate, but then admitted that, in the end, the only person he had to blame for how his life had ended was himself. Humbled and belittled by that knowledge, and bested by Revan despite all his clever plans and conquests, Malak, realizing that nothing he had ever done or could ever do would compare to the accomplishments of his former master, at last acknowledged his inferiority.
His final words were the truest he had ever spoken:

"And in the end, as the darkness takes me, I am nothing."

The Exile

Mandalorian Wars

Before he could begin his trials to become a Knight and take on his own apprentice, the Mandalorian Wars surged through the galaxy. The Exile, with overwhelming compassion for the lives lost on the Outer Rim, was soon lured to battle and joined Jedi Knight Revan's forces after being personally recruited by Malak himself; thus never being ordained as a Jedi Knight, and leaving a prospective Padawan, Mical, without a master.
The Exile was a General directly under Revan during the Mandalorian Wars. Overseeing the final battle at Malachor V, he gave the order to activate the Mass Shadow Generator. This generator crushed both the Republic and Mandalorian soldiers caught in its destructive sphere. The death and destruction caused such a substantial 'Wound in the Force' that the shock would have killed the Exile had he not detached himself from the Force. The only Jedi under Revan able to turn away from the dark side after Malachor V, he was also the only Jedi who willingly returned to Coruscant to face trial for his actions - and also to defend them.
Despite an impassioned plea, the Jedi High Council decreed that because he had followed Revan to war, he was to be cast out of the Jedi Order. In reality, the Council feared the 'wound' in the Force that surrounded him. Some on the council felt that they were punishing the Exile not because of what he did, but because he was symbolic of the many Jedi that had fallen to the dark side over the course of history. These council members felt that he was the perfect opportunity to examine why and how so many Jedi fall to the dark side. More conservative council members, however, felt no need to do more than exile the former Jedi.
Full details of the Exile's adventures in the Outer Rim are unknown, but it is known that Jedi Master Atris had orchestrated the Exile's return to known space. In order to attract the growing Sith threat, she leaked his return to the galaxy and, predictably, attracted the Sith's attention.

The Exile's return to the Republic space occurred in 3,951 BBY. The Harbinger, a Republic cruiser bound to Onderon, suddenly received an order to abort the trip and head to the Outer Rim instead. The Exile's description was included, and he was requested to be given status of a diplomatic passenger and escorted to Telos.
When the Harbinger had the Exile on board, they were ambushed by a Sith warship. Then Ebon Hawk, a small freighter that once had played a major role in the Jedi Civil War, rescued him from an unappealing fate. With the help of the utility droid T3-M4, the Exile was taken care of, and the Ebon Hawk was guided to the Peragus mining facility.
When the Exile woke up from his stupor in the mining facility, he found an old woman left for dead named Kreia, a mysterious Jedi Master (exiled by the Council because of her view on the force, See next article...) who guided the Exile through his journey to find the missing Jedi Masters who sentenced him to exile. They found the facility to be completely abandoned, except for malfunctioning mining droids. While searching for a way off the station, the Exile found Atton Rand, a man imprisoned within the brig. After Darth Sion and a force of Sith Assassins arrived on the Harbinger, intending to kill the Exile (believing he is the last of the Jedi), the three escaped with T3-M4 onboard the Ebon Hawk, traveling to Telos, finding it to be the only available destination in the Peragus navigational charts. While being pursued by the Sith in the asteroid field around Peragus, laser fire ignited the volatile fuel within the asteroids. The resulting explosion destroyed both the facility and the planet itself, though the Ebon Hawk and the Sith onboard the Harbinger were able to escape.
After arriving at the massive Citadel Station in orbit around Telos, the Ebon Hawk and T3-M4 were stolen and brought to the Telosian surface while the Exile and his crew were held for questioning in the Peragus explosion. After Republic investigations proved their innocence, they utilized alternative transportation to get down to the surface, where they were shot down by Czerka air-defense turrets. A Zabrak engineer named Bao-Dur, who designed the Mass Shadow Generator and served under the Exile at Malachor V, saw the crash and pulled the three unharmed from the wreckage. While on the surface, they learned that the Ebon Hawk had been taken to the old planetary aqueducts in the polar region of the planet. Stealing a shuttle from an abandoned military compound, they traveled to the aqueducts and found Atris there, a member of the Council that sentenced the Exile. Atris was attempting to recover lost Jedi teachings and had surrounded herself with several Echani sisters. These sisters, known as Handmaidens, had vowed not to learn the ways of the Jedi. After a heated debate over what the Jedi should have done during the Mandalorian Wars with Atris, the Exile and his party left with the Ebon Hawk and T3-M4. He soon discovered, however, that Brianna, the Last Handmaiden, abandoned Atris to join him on the Ebon Hawk. Despite the rest of the crew thinking she was a spy sent by Atris, and in defiance of Kreia's protests, the Exile allowed Brianna to stay after revealing herself on board the ship.
After leaving the academy, T3 revealed that he had managed to download Atris's database while being held, including a recording of the Exile's trial and records of where the last five remaining Jedi Masters were hiding: Atris on Telos, Kavar on Onderon, Vrook Lamar on Dantooine, Zez-Kai Ell on Nar Shaddaa, and Lonna Vash on Korriban. The crew went off to these worlds in search of the Jedi in an attempt to unite them against the Sith and to find the answers as to why the Exile was sentenced as such.
After locating and conversing with all of the remaining Jedi Masters, the Exile returned to Dantooine to find the rebuilt Jedi Enclave. There Masters Vrook, Kavar and Zez-Kai Ell had formed a council in which they would decide his fate. Right after they reestablished his exile and just before the Masters could strip him of the Force, Kreia stormed into the meeting to save the Exile at the last moment. The Exile, still under his stasis state established by the Masters, was left helpless to defend them as Kreia put the Jedi Masters through the same suffering the Exile had felt on Malachor V, leaving them not only dead, but void of the Force.
After she left, the Exile finally regained his strength and departed for Telos IV to find Kreia, now reestablished as Darth Traya. There the Exile was forced to confront Atris at the secret academy. After he defeated her, the Exile was able to persuade Atris to forgive her and help her see the folly of her beliefs. Atris then told the Exile that Traya had fled to Malachor V to wait for him there for a final confrontation. Atris then told him that she was no longer a Jedi and would go into exile and try to find understanding. Shortly thereafter, the Exile faced Darth Nihilus aboard the Ravager, to keep him from destroying Telos in order to fuel his need and hunger for the Force. With the assistance of Visas Marr, former apprentice to Nihilus, and Mandalore with his Mandalorians, the Exile defeated him and headed to Malachor V.
After crashing on the surface of Malachor, the Exile proceeded to the Trayus Academy, where he battled the Sith assassins and confronted Darth Sion himself. After persuading Sion to let go of his hatred, which caused Sion to finally succumb to his numerous injuries, he confronted Kreia, who had revealed her true identity as a Sith Lord. After a fierce but short battle, the Exile defeated Kreia but spared her life. Before she gave her life to the Force, Kreia gave the Exile information about Revan's location in the Unknown Regions and about the future fates of the Exile's allies and the planets they had visited. Shortly after this exchange, Bao-Dur's remote reactivated the Mass Shadow Generator in order to completely destroy the planet. The crew of the badly damaged Ebon Hawk retrieved the Exile and escaped the planet.

The Exile, at first, was a Force user of average ability. He demonstrated an unusual ability to easily form connections with others, forming bonds through the Force that allowed him to leech off of his followers, though he was largely unaware of this ability. After reconnecting with the Force, the ability became even stronger. He was able to gain greater power through all the deaths he caused, a result of his being a "wound" in the Force, but again he was largely unaware of it.
The Exile was one of only four known Force users to voluntarily sever themselves from the Force (the others being Jacen Solo, during the Yuuzhan Vong war, Ben Skywalker during Yuuzhan Vong war and the beginning of The Swarm War, and Kyle Katarn after his subsequent near fall to the dark side on Dromund Kaas, although none, after The Exile, were so severe that they allegedly caused a "wound" in the Force. In all four cases the severings were temporary and eventually reversed).

The ramifications of the Exile's actions are still being felt throughout the galaxy. The Jedi he trained would go on to resurrect the decimated Jedi order into a body that would number thousands until Palpatine's great purge. Furthermore the actions he took on Dantooine, Onderon, and Telos would ensure the solidification of a Republic that had been teetering on collapse, and prolong its existence for several thousand more years. Whether this would ultimately prove a good or bad thing will undoubtedly be a subject of debate among historians until time's end, but whatever the result it is undeniable that the Exile is an extraordinary example of a single individual upon which the fate of the galaxy, for an albeit brief time, pivoted.
