and what if we already do? is protesting still pointless?

Well PVS have you called your congressman?

Yes it is. Here's what it does... if you are holding a anti-abortion sign all you are going to do is piss off people who support abortion and get a thumbs up from those who like your sign. I think it is very rare for someone's opinions about politics and life to be swayed by the ramblings of someone holding up a sign looking like an idiot.

or it could be that by gathering you establish a unignorable presence as a group. as far as 'offending', well why should that deter peopel from making their voices heard?
if you think that all protest consists of holding signs and looking like idiots and being completely inneffective, you should read up more on american history.
maybe the civil rights movement would be appropriate study material? start with martin luther king junior, who according to your logic basked in the pointless and offensive, and accomplished nothing.

There’s a big difference between protest and revolution. If we really wanted to make a difference, we would have to start another American Revolution and try and fix the government that’s so messed up today. Like AF and AC said, the government doesn’t give a shit about what we say! If the American people stood up to them and threatened them, they might be more inclined to listen or else be overthrown. Allow me to quote Thomas Jefferson:

A little rebellion now and then is a good thing…It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government…God forbid that we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion…The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

Unfortunately, Americans don’t see this as a solution, and I don’t see any rebellion happening anytime soon.

How did the Revolution start, though? By people protesting what they thought were unfair laws and treatment. Sure, the methods were different, but it was effective. Protest IS effective in getting things done in this country. Women wouldn't be allowed to vote if they didn't protest. Segregation would not have ended if not for protest.

I find it quite sad that these days, most people are too afraid of the government to speak out. That most people don't actually know what their rights are or what they mean. The government's supposed to be afraid of the people, because it only stands so long as we agree it is doing it's job. That's how the US is supposed to be...but it's gotten so twisted around that most people do not realize this. And that is not a good thing.

But as has been said -- the US government does not give a shit what the people think or want anymore, or at least, the current administration doesn't. If Bush and co. actually did, they wouldn't have such abysmal approval ratings. And I really don't think Bush will do shit to fix any of the problems he's caused...why should he bother? He's effectively a lame duck president, as he has no worries for needing to get re-elected.

I've said this many times before, and I'll say it again -- I am predicting a large political realignment in this year's Congressional elections, and the 2008 presidential elections. And you know what, I really, really hope it happens. Because this country needs some serious changes, and it needed them yesterday.

I was being serious. 😐

No, really, instead of using Stainless Steel (or God forbid, Corningware) pots and pans to beat on while in the protest circle, Tupperware would absorb the annoying sound a bit better, and probably provide a little more bass to the timpani orchestra of circle-walkers.

Do you live in my world?? 😂

ditto. cant say anything else other than what I have known for ages which this is one fu cked up planet we live on.

when will it finally be that everyone in america wakes up and comes to the conclusion that not a thing has been done to either punish those responsible for 9/11, or prevent another from happening. i guess thats not going to happen until n.y. gets nuked, and unfortunately i'll be too busy burning to death from radiation to finally get to say "i told you so".

yeah Im afraid your right.there are too many people out there who are too frightened of the truth that they dont want to get out of their comfort zones and acknowledge this isnt the country that our forefathers fought for anymore. That it has become a police state and dictatership. No matter what evidence you show them they just want to turn a blind eye to it because the truth is too frightening for them.My sister is one of those people. For that reason,I pretty much stay away from her.

Great post Lana.I could not have said it better myself. It needs some serious changes alright like a third party because Clinton and Bush and Gore and all of them, their all in it together and yeah it makes me sick that people these days are afraid of the government, that they wont speak out against it and try and fix it.Like you said, protest is effective,it also made the government do what the people wanted when they got fed up with the vietnam war because we were never trying to win it and people finally begin to see that and protest against it and as a result,we withdrew from nam.Yeah what I also think is sad is that there are lots of people out there that dont want to hear how evil people like bush and clinton really are, they dont want to hear the evidence about that because they want to stay in their comfort zones.they dont want to believe that america has turned into a nazi regime and police state like it has.People should be on the steps of washington demanding the imprisonment of Bush, cheny and others but they are too afraid to do so.pretty sad it is.

THEN, it will be who's next....... 🤨

If I remember my United States map right, the poisonous water will flow into the Great lakes........and that's not good were I live...nooo..

Good.

w/e.. I was referring more to general idiot protesting of 15-50 people. MLK was brilliant and since you know your history so well how many people did he help muster together at D.C.?

This city has the most american people in it, than any other city on earth. It has to be protected.
