I swear. The more artists try to make something "cool" the worse it looks. These are comic books. They should realize it's ok to be a little cheesy.
I agree, I like some of the "cool" looks, but sometimes they go overboard. That's why when they updated everyone else, I'm glad they left Spider-Man alone in the Ultimate Universe. His costume is exactly what a fifteen year old boy would go out in if he attained superpowers and thought he would be so awesome.
I do like when they make costumes look more realistic though, but this has to be differentiated from making them "cooler." Artists like Joe Bennett leave the costume design alone, but touch it up by adding textures to the costume fabric, drawing in where seams and zippers would be, etc. He left Captain America and Falcon's costumes alone, but made them look better by making them look more believable, with just a few extra lines to make it look like an actually tailored piece of clothing. Same with his tenures on Hawkman and Birds of Prey. Same costumes, just a new vibrancy to them.
