Make a sig using any editing program - Adobe Photoshop and the like, make sure when you save it you 'Save for Web', and ensure the proportions are 450x150 pixels, and that the sig is below the 30kb limit.
As for an avatar, go to 'edit options' in your control panel and change it there.
Alternatively, you could just go here for sigs or here for avatars 😄
