You need to add a layer mask to the layer and then you can edit the mask to get that effect. You use brush tools on the mask that will take away parts that you need to, use the Help for Layer Mask or the Internet and it will help you out. Layer Masks is a very useful tool.

I use PS to do the layout then import into Image Ready to do the animation.
