That's actually something I was thinking while watching, too...
Overall, that's one of my favorite scenes, after watching it again (didn't go to the theater this time, I copped out and watched it online)

Seeing this for the fifth time I really have to give it up to Gary Oldman. Man he was so amazing in this film. Especially
Spoiler:Man his delivery there was amazing. I know Heath and his Joker clearly stole the show but the more I see this movie the more I am just amazed at how good the acting was all around and how strong the cast was. That's really one of the things that made this movie so superior as well.
during that scene where they were scoping out taking out the hostages and Batman told them to give him 5 minutes and he was like "no we have clear shots!" and "We have to save Dent...I...have to save Dent!".
I completely disagree with what everyone's saying about the detonators. Because
Spoiler:
if the detonators had been for their own ships, it would have been a morality lesson. "They brought about their own destruction trying to destroy others; if only they'd done the right thing, they'd still be alive." And it would be completely against the Joker's character to do something like that.

Spoiler:
I think the Joker would have thought it was funny if they blew themselves up. Dead people can't learn a morality lesson, they're dead. And he assumed anyway that both of them were going to push the button. I'm not saying that he did give them the detonators to their own boats but I am saying if I was in that situation knowing the Joker I wouldn't be 100% sure that what he said was the straight forward truth so I would have been hesistant to use the detonator anyway thinking it's totally possible that it could blow up my boat as well.
I thought the detonators would have been for their own ships for sure. It IS the Joker.
After all, when the surviving boat found out that the others were planning on blowing them up, they would be extremely pissed right? Like "Those People were going to murder us! Those ****ERS! I'm glad they are dead! They were gonna kill us!"
sounds like something the Joker would get satisfaction from.
