Chris Nolan on The Dark Knight
Source: Melissa Greenwood August 30, 2006

ComingSoon.net sat in on an edit bay session with director Chris Nolan for The Prestige (lots more on that next week!) and the helmer talked a bit about both his blockbuster hit Batman Begins and its upcoming sequel, The Dark Knight.

Nolan said he was very surprised by Batman Begins' success, "for the simple reason that I felt we had really poured our hearts out in making a good film and that on our own terms we had succeeded. I never really expected to satisfy critics and Batman fans and regular audiences equally. I mean I thought maybe we'd get two points on the drawing board if you like, but the fact that all three seemed to respond well, that was a big surprise to me. I mean it felt like you were going to lose one aspect or someone… I think we were very fortunate in that regard, it's very gratifying."

Talking about the follow-up, in which Heath Ledger will play The Joker opposite Christian Bale, he mentioned that they're changing things up. "I think what people responded to well about 'Batman Begins' is how different it was from their expectations so I think we would be foolish to not recognize that and to [try to replicate that now predictable blueprint]. I think we'll be doing something very different for the sequel. I certainly wouldn't have any interest in trying to repeat experience or the formula we've made, because particularly being the origin story, it's a very unique thing, a very singular experience. My interest would sort of be to move on from that and to do something quite different."

The Dark Knight is coming in June of 2008. The Prestige, starring Hugh Jackman, Bale, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Andy Serkis, Piper Perabo and David Bowie, opens October 20.

some dude in the superhero hype forum suggested hugo weaving for joker, and i agree with that. (he got a really big devilish smile)

......might have been good but Ledger is the new joker

I kind of think that if Jim Carrey wasn't the Riddler already, he should've been the joker, and paul bettany the riddler.

I've been saying for a while that I think the best person for the role of The Riddler (if he ever even pops up in the series) is Edward Norton.

I second that, he is a fantastic actor.

Here is a link from Superhero Hype, it is Heath Ledger`s view on the Joker in The Dark Knight.

No my sig is refreing to my script Batman Escalation which I written for a months and yes she is in the script.

oh alright going to post there hehe

I love the quote under your sig... 🙂

speaking of selina kyle, would charlize theron (aeon flux) or jessica biel (blade trinity) fit the role?

I would hate Theron for Selina, but Biel...maybe.

In one of jessica biel's interviews, her future aspirations in her movie career were to work with Christian Bale and Heath Ledger if she were lucky

In terms of playing Selina Kyle I envision Kate Beckinsale playing her, she looks the part and has acted along side Christan Bale in a another film. I don`t know if she could pull Catwoman of but Selina Kyle no doubt.

Yeah I've been saying for like a year now that if I had a choice, I'd put Beckinsale in it, and not as a result of "she pulled it off in Underworld", cause I didn't see those movies. She's beautiful with a dark twist, and Catwoman shouldn't be EVIL, just...what's the word.....

The way I wrote her in Batman Escalation she is a like Bruce Wayne, has had a Childhood tragedy and as a result of growing up in the cruel parts of Gotham City she has suffered. She is tough while at the same time venerable. Also I have written her as a character who has entered into Batman and Jokers fight and is being used as a pawn as well as that she has no idea what she has entered herself into when she has a relationship with Bruce Wayne.

I tend to think of her as Batman`s opposite. She believes in Batman Escalation when Holly has died at the hands of the Joker that she should take revenge into her own hands by killing the Joker. Which of course is something Batman will never do.
