The flattering tactic: I've been noticing that a few posters, and one in particular, use this tactic. It basically entails them flattering, or charming the opponent. They'll come in and say something like ''well, that was brilliantly argued and I commend your debating skills''. It's just a way of bowing out of the debate without people noticing, I'd rather they just didn't bother.

ive seen it used as a win tactic many times.
butter up the opponent so that maybe they'll concede even though their point is valid. so it would be like ''well, that was brilliantly argued and I commend your debating skills, but you are absolutely wrong''.

Yeah, it really is annoying to read, especially when the 'charmed' opponent just gives up.

To be fair, "buttering up" can be used as a way of prematurely defusing a potential flame-war.
