Well it worked in Star Wars - 100,000s of planets under control of a chancellor...

It collapsed because of Palpatine(an evil, supernatural, unrealistic figure). Before Palpatine, the Republic was working well for thousands of years. It wasnt perfect, there were plenty of loosely governed areas and so forth but it was perhaps as good as it could hope to get.

Depends how high one places EU and the like. It seems the Republic had been corrupt and crumbling for a long time. Which was why Palpatine was able to get in and effect it so much.
You had the Jedi order that had become to aloof and stagnant.
You had enough worlds unhappy with things that they felt good about splitting off.
You had weak leadership and overly ambitious politicians.
You had it to weak to protect itself (thus the master stroke of having a clone army in the wings) or keep order.
Palps got his claws in because of the Republics natural decline. If he hadn't been their chances are something else would have split it up.
People talk the talk but to walk the walk everyone has to reach an agreement like religion or which side of the road to drive on. I dont think anyone will give up something like religion or THE SIDE OF THE ROAD so easily. It is like when your in school and you dont like someone. You have a reason but even if you said you liked them you still truly hated them. Now remove the word SCHOOL with WORLD and the word SOMEONE into SOME COUNTRY
World unification sounds like a wonderful idea, but I don't think that it would be so wonderful in reality. If people were benevolent (especially those in positions of power) I'd consider this, but as things stand it I don't think so. =)
There is not a single human being on earth who is fit to rule over all others. NOT ONE. Forget one nation.

the world will never be united as one. there is too much going on in the middle east, where they have been fighting since the beginning of time.
Not really since the beginning of time. Not more then African tribes have feuded since the beginning of time or that there has been wars in the Europe.

I beleive there is a chance to one day bring about the uniting of everything, all countries, peoples, and cultures under a single world order with a single common goal of livng and under a set of morals and beleifs. How? Very slowly, without suspicion, because the truth is, under everything in everyone there is a common amount of beleifs, possibly suppressed or deep down, but they exist. All it takes is to locate what those are and be able to pull them out of anyone, even crazy terrorists like Bin Laden (though a lot for religious reasons) beleives what he is doing is right and shares those same beleifs. In small areas at first, all one would have to do is create a mutual feeling for a government or society that tugs at those beleifs and for a short while those people are all there for the same reason, on the same side. By using this to gain a majority of a populace on a similiar beleif, that group can be matched to others elsewhere to create a larger one, so on and so forth until there is a chance to create large sections of populations that can understand that they share something in common. Then it only takes something to put those larger parts together, and under some common form of leadership.
