Fox has announced a new division- Fox Atomic- that's going to be releasing more youth-focused films and graphic novels. "Youth-Focused" apparently means 17-24 year old males though- whic you would assume is the standard mainstream demographic anyway. In any case- they have a few high profile genre releases coming out in the upcoming months... along with a Revenge of the Nerds remake.
Turistas (December 1, 2006)
After a terrifying bus accident maroons a diverse group of young adventure travelers in a remote Brazilian beach town, they slowly discover that the white sand beaches and lush jungles are concealing a darker, unsettling secret. Turistas stars Josh Duhamel (NBC’s Las Vegas) and Melissa George (The Amityville Horror) and is directed by John Stockwell (Blue Crush).
The Hills Have Eyes 2 (March 2, 2007)
The sequel to the 2006 horror re-make, The Hills Have Eyes which grossed over $41 million at the domestic box office, is written by horror legend Wes Craven and Jonathan Craven and will be directed by Martin Weisz. The storyline follows a group of young National Guard trainees who are attacked by mutants during a training mission in the New Mexico desert.
28 Weeks Later (May 11, 2007)
The creative team of Danny Boyle, Alex Garland, and Andrew Macdonald are back to re-invent the zombie movie yet again with the sequel to 28 Days Later. Lead by director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later picks up six months after the Rage virus has decimated the city of London. The US Army has restored order and is repopulating the quarantined city, when a carrier of the Rage virus enters London and unknowingly re-ignites the spread of the deadly infection, wreaking havoc on the entire population.
Also of interest to us is their Comic group- they've teamed up with HarperCollins to publish a whole mess of tie-in and original graphic novels.
Fox Atomic Comics plans on releasing four graphic novels in 2007, based on upcoming theatrical films as well as original content. The first title slated for release is 28 Days Later: The Aftermath (due out Spring 2007), written by Steve Niles (30 Days of Night, Criminal Macabre, Wake the Dead, The Creeper) and edited by Jimmy Palmiotti (Publisher/Editor of Event Comics and Marvel Knights), which bridges the gap between the original film and its sequel, 28 Weeks Later. Next up will be The Hills Have Eyes: The Beginning inspired by Wes Craven’s film The Hills Have Eyes and the upcoming sequel The Hills Have Eyes 2. Due out fall 2007 is The Nightmare Factory, adapted from the anthology series by Thomas Ligotti, which will be a recurring anthology series of one to three separate horror tales per novel. Additional title(s) will be announced shortly.
I can't say I'm very excited about either the Hills Have Eyes or 28 Days Later sequels, as both of them are very overrated movies that don't do anything for me. The graphic novels have a lot of talent behind them though- it'll be interesting to see what they do with them.
