Originally Goldstein was going to play Yar, but she dropped out and Sertis stepped in, and then the director decided that Crosby who was originally playing Troi was better as Yar, and Sertis as Troi, and so they changed Macha Hernandez to Tasha Yar as Crosby was now playing Yar.

With the Alien killing the monks, I believe it is when they are supposed to be out in there wheat fields, the Alien comes through the wheat and kills them that way. Supposed to look funny from the top view.
