i guess i see "badass" as completely with out morals or sense of social duty, and no chance of recovery, so :

male : daniel day-lewis as "bill the butcher" in gangs of new york.

female : helena bonham-carter as "bellatrix" in the harry potter series.

I go with Marv & Sarah - they are the biggest in the movies I think.

jet li in hero and zhang ziyi in crouching tiger are my picks in the make believe kung fu kung fu category..

sci fi would be agent smith and darth vader tied.. and no pick yet for a woman..

jason bourne & brian mills tied and mrs. smith for just general bad assery..

Male: Achilles - I wasn't that much of a fan for his acting, but no one could deny his air of badassery once he wields his sword. No other sword and sandals character ever evicted such an invincible aura.

Special mention to Colonel Miles Quaritch from Avatar for being tough as nails. And to Prince Nuada for being just kickass.

Female: Sarah Connor. No other female movie character surpass the badassery of Sarah Connor without seeming to go over the top (like laura croft and charlie angel's wannabes).

Male: Riddick
